Motorstorm RC (PSV/PS3) Review | Video Games News, Reviews ...

Following last year?s MotorStorm?Apocalypse on PS3,?the series is back with MotorStorm RC, a?PSN only title for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3.?The game is free for?PSV owners, so really, there?s no reason you shouldn?t already own it. While it does cost $10 for PS3 owners, it?s worth a look if you?re interested in a fun, yet simplistic racer.

Due to the free nature of the Playstation Vita version, which is the one I reviewed, I will grant the game certain leeway. You see, Motorstorm RC is not a very lengthy game, nor is it in depth. The whole game just has you racing an RC car through very short tracks, that happen to be beautifully detailed, just pushing the right analog stick to go forward or backwards and the left stick controls direction.

Using the dual analog?control scheme takes a little getting used. Since you only use the two sticks and the right?shoulder button?to reset your car, this will feel a little weird for anyone who has come off any of the other Vita racers that utilize the right shoulder button to accelerate. However, it does work. Even though you will still spin out quite often, even after mastering the controls, most races will be pretty easy if you remember to lay off the gas before each and every turn.

After the initial difficulty of learning the controls, you will have about two to three hours of playtime in the game.?It?s not that the developers didn?t create a wide variety of tracks, it?s just that the game modes?are all pretty basic. You?ll have standard races, Hot Lap,?Pursuit, and Drift. Hot Lap is a race to beat a set time, Pursuit has you overtaking a set amount of cars as quickly as possible, and Drift has you drifting to get a high score. Drift doesn?t appear until later on in the game and isn?t used very often, which is a good thing as it is pretty boring.

Even though the modes are all uninspired, you will have a quite a bit of fun in them. Being able to speed around a?corner, just a split second away from spinning out, only to get into first place and win the race is very exhilarating. Not only that, but because the laps only last for about 20 seconds, you?ll be able to lap many cars as you head around the tracks and laugh as you speed by them.

Although the tracks are short, they all have a high level of detail. Each of the 4 locations?Monument Valley, Arctic Edge, Pacific Rift, and Apocalypse?are all filled with colourful backgrounds and each have a very distinct feel as you race through them. The actual track design may be a little confusing though?and will have you running into cars that are criss-crossing through the track, but it is minor and a quick turn?will save you from colliding with another racer.

Aside from the tracks, there are a ton of different cars to collect, almost 100 in all. You can choose to race them in Free Race, or you?ll unlock them depending on the medal you get in the single player game. If you are a little irked that there is no online multiplayer, they do include a global leaderboard so you can see just how you rank up against the rest of the world.

The game may be lacking game modes, yet it carries a price tag of $0 right now, so if you own a PlayStation Vita, you have no reason not to head into the PlayStation Store and download it right now. For PlayStation 3 owners wondering if this is worth $10, I?d say it is, if you come in with low expectations. Otherwise, you can always download the free PlayStation Vita version onto your hard drive and keep it there until you finally pick up a Vita.
