Nokia 808 PureView (Unlocked)

The Nokia 808 PureView ($699 list) is an engineering exercise and a collector's item. It's also a near-total failure as a modern smartphone. It packs an amazing 41-megapixel camera sensor, but thanks to an exceedingly long development time, the 808 PureView runs the archaic Symbian OS instead of Windows Phone like all current Nokia devices. Worse, some of the preloaded apps don't even work correctly. Nokia hasn't given an exact date for the 808 PureView's arrival in the U.S., and if you're wondering why you'd want this cell phone, you don't. It's way too expensive and is compromised for American consumers.

Design and Display
The 808 PureView?not to be confused with?the Kanye West album,?808s & Heartbreak, or the 808 kick drum you hear on Beastie Boys and Run D.M.C. records?is an odd beast. It's slightly bulky and misshapen, measuring 4.9 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighing a hefty six ounces. It's not actually 0.6 inches thick all the way through, though, as there's a very prominent bump around the camera lens. The PureView 808 is closer to half an inch thick otherwise, which is still more than most in this era of super-thin smartphones. But there's a 41-megapixel camera in there, so we'll give it a break.

As always, Nokia has a fine touch with hardware design. The 808 PureView feels very well made, with quality plastics, a Corning Gorilla Glass front panel, and button housings that seem laser-cut in their precision. The phone turns on and off almost instantly with the little Power button on the bottom right of the front panel. A slider switch handles unlocking the screen faster than any other phone I've tested recently. You get a top-mounted micro HDMI port and a dedicated Camera button as well. Nokia also packs in a microUSB charger, a data cable, a wired stereo headset, and a wrist strap in the box.

Gorilla glass aside, the 4-inch, 640-by-360-pixel capacitive AMOLED touch screen is old news. Fonts look pixelated, and you can't see much of desktop Web pages, but at least it's bright and colorful, with deep blacks. Touch response is uneven; during testing the phone lagged finger swipes by about half a second, which made navigation tricky. There's an accelerometer, but it constantly jumped around even when we were holding the handset perfectly level in landscape mode. Typing was incredibly frustrating as a result, although the keys are roomy enough. In portrait mode it was much tougher to type accurately. It seems like a software issue; there's no problem typing quickly on the iPhone and numerous Android phones with 3.5-inch screens in portrait mode; 4 inches should be plenty.

Connectivity and Voice Calls
The PureView 808 is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and five-band HSPA+ 14.4 (850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. We had no problem connecting to a WPA2-encrypted network in our testing lab. The 808 is a true world phone, and one that can run at 14.4 speeds on both AT&T and T-Mobile here in the U.S., as well as overseas. Unfortunately, there's no 4G support of any kind, which is a tough con to swallow at $700. Since it's unlocked, you'll need to provide your own SIM card. This is the major reason why the PureView 808 costs so much, though many unlocked, high-end Android smartphones with dual-core processors and much better screens cost $500 or less.

Voice calls sounded good when they worked. Unfortunately, that wasn't often. Even with five solid AT&T signal bars in the middle of Manhattan, most dial attempts ended in "Connection Error" dialogs. Then, mysteriously, a third or fourth try would go through, and the call would stay connected. Voice quality in the earpiece sounded fine, and mostly midrange, but with plenty of gain. Transmissions through the microphone were exceptionally full and clear, almost like a corded phone. Noise cancellation is also good; we heard very little street noise through the earpiece in a voicemail test, and there was certainly plenty going on at the time.

Calls through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars)?sounded clear. Voice dialing over Bluetooth was hopeless, though; we couldn't get the 808 PureView to recognize any of our commands. The speakerphone sounded well balanced, but too low for use outdoors even at maximum volume. Nokia rates the phone at 11 hours of talk time in 2G mode and 6.5 hours in 3G; we're still running battery tests and will update this review as soon as we have results.

OS, Apps, and Multimedia
Underneath the hood, there's a 1.3GHz ARM 11 single-core processor, 512MB RAM, and 16GB of onboard storage that you can expand to 48GB by installing up to a 32GB microSD card underneath the battery. My 32GB SanDisk card worked fine, although pulling the battery to swap cards is never fun.

Unfortunately, the phone runs Symbian, which dates back an entire decade. Nokia has abandoned the OS in favor of Windows Phone. The 808 PureView has Symbian because the company has been developing the phone for several years, and had started well before deciding to throw in with Microsoft. All things considered, Nokia has done a decent job of modernizing Symbian. At least superficially, it looks like an Android phone, with four customizable home screens you can swipe between. You tap icons to run programs, and you can install third-party apps, although there aren't that many, at least for us here in the U.S.

Alas, there is some good stuff in here: Quickoffice lets you open and edit Word and Excel files; Shazam hears music playing in the room and identifies it for you; Angry Birds and Asphalt 6 demos are colorful and play smoothly. Interestingly, the 808 PureView includes Nokia Rich Recording, which lets the phone record audio at up to 140dB, which is roughly the volume of a jet engine while you're standing 10 feet away from it. That's great for, say, recording concerts, but please don't try the jet engine thing at home.

Otherwise, it's just too difficult to get just about anything done unless you're already intimately familiar with Symbian?and very patient. Menus beget submenus, which beget dialog boxes, which beget error messages. The browser is a disaster; aside from the blocky, tiny fonts and stubborn screen response, the browser gets hung up on commonly used elements and can take a minute or more to deliver an HTML page.

Worse, many things don't even work at all. Nokia Music goes to a defunct Ovi Store, which then puts up a screen telling you a new store is on the way. The IM client is impossible to configure, as it asks for a CWA Server URL and a Network Connection type, and not, say, whether you use AIM or Google Talk. Nokia Recommends suggests a few random music albums, but then directs you to Nokia Music, which is down. Nokia Drive actually starts Nokia Maps, which does work and delivers voice-enabled, turn-by-turn GPS navigation, although it looks dated.

There's a standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack on top that works with the bundled wired earbuds as well as any aftermarket headphones you may want to use. Music tracks sounded clear and punchy through Plantronics BackBeat Go Bluetooth headphones ($99.99, 4 stars). The music player displays albums in a jukebox-style format you can swipe back and forth. For video, the 808 PureView had no problem playing back all of our test files, including DivX, Xvid, MP4, H.264, AVI, and WMV at resolutions up to 1080p, though obviously the low-resolution screen is a limiting factor in terms of sharpness.

Why A 'Want' Button Would Revolutionize ... - Business Insider

Vimeo

Does Facebook like "Want"?

The Facebook blogosphere is a-buzz today with speculation that the social media giant is testing a "Want" button. It would be a potentially huge development for brands who would love to see not what people "Like," but what they'd actually be interested in purchasing.

"The code was released to the Facebook Javascript SDK on Wednesday," Tom Waddington, a web developer for Cut Out + Keep, told Mashable. "I keep track of the changes to the file."

According to Waddington, although the button is currently disabled and isn't publicly listed on Facebook's social plugins, it works on Open Graph products tagged as "products."

At this point, any developer can create a button for whatever word they desire?they just need a third-party app that would allow it to show in people's news feeds or timelines. If a "Want" button?similar to the "Like" button?became widespread (or officially endorsed by the company) it would give Facebook and its advertisers a boat-load of new data on purchase-intent.

Which is the one thing Facebook currently lacks.

Facebook's drama with advertisers has been making headlines ever since its IPO. Everyone on Madison Avenue has an opinion about whether or not Facebook advertising works.

When users press that they "Like" a post, it doesn't indicate intent to buy. For all Volkswagen knows, those users already have Jettas in their garages. A "Want" button would allow users to share what they're lusting over with their Facebook network.

This move would also make Facebook more competitive with Google's Adwords.

The power of Google's Adwords is that when someone searches for an item on Google, shopping intent is inferred. (Why search for a VW Jetta if you're not thinking of buying a car?) As of now, no one goes to Facebook to shop. Creating that new space?and not in an app that brands have to create on their own, but in a button that is already a part of Facebook?would establish valuable data and further integrate Facebook with retailers.

It could be huge.

(AP) ? Syrian troops rained tank and artillery shells down on a rebellious suburb of the Syrian capital of Damascus Friday, killing dozens of people during a particularly bloody week across the country, opposition groups and activists said.

It's difficult to get an accurate death toll in tightly controlled Syria, where journalists and human rights groups are either banned or severely restricted. But two opposition groups that compile and document casualties reported the death of more than 125 civilians in fighting across the country on Thursday alone.

Death tolls often take several days to compile because of the restrictions and chaos in the country.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Thursday's toll included more than 60 soldiers. If confirmed, it would be one of the highest death tolls on a single day since the start of the uprising against President Bashar Assad in March 2011.

Activists said at least 43 people were killed in over two days of shelling in the sprawling Damascus suburb of Douma that has been a hotbed of dissent against Assad's regime. The dead included three children and five members of a single family.

The barrage is part of a fierce government offensive aimed at regaining control of parts of Damascus suburbs where rebels operate, particularly Douma.

A local activist who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons said the shelling was "relentless" throughout Thursday, and exploding shells killed people in their homes.

"They (government troops) are trying to bring Douma under control, but they are being met by fierce resistance," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the group's director. He said most of the dead were civilians.

The Local Coordination Committees network said 59 people were killed in Thursday's shelling of Damascus suburbs, most of them in Douma. The difference in tolls could not be reconciled.

The state-run news agency SANA said troops continue to pursue "terrorist groups" in Douma, raiding their hideouts and destroying their communications and other equipment. Clashes resulted in the death of dozens of terrorists ? the official term authorities use for rebels ? and the wounding and arrest of many others, the statement said.

Amateur videos posted by activists online showed bloodied bodies lying on blankets in a room and others shrouded in white sheets and placed on stretchers. "A new massacre by Bashar Assad," cried a man holding a dead girl in a pink blouse, a large gash on her face.

The violence around the capital's suburbs mirrored fighting across many parts of Syria that killed dozens of other people Thursday, according to the groups.

Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011.

Much of the violence that has gripped Syria has been sanctioned by the government to crush dissent. But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several huge suicide bombings this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the battle. A bomb blast rocked central Damascus on Thursday near a busy market and the country's main justice complex, wounding at least three people and sending a cloud of black smoke into the air.

The latest carnage came as world powers show new urgency to resolve the crisis, which so far has resisted international efforts.

World powers will meet Saturday in Geneva for talks on Syria, but few observers expect a breakthrough. Syria has the protection of Russia, a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, and has so far been impervious to international pressure.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow will not endorse a call on Assad to give up power.

"We are not supporting and will not support any external meddling," he said. "External players must not dictate ... to Syrians, but, first of all, must commit to influencing all the sides in Syria to stop the violence."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday it was "very clear" that all the participants at the Geneva meeting ? including Russia ? are on board with a transition plan created by international envoy Kofi Annan. His plan calls for the formation of a national unity government that would oversee the drafting of a new constitution and elections.

Clinton told reporters that the invitations to Saturday's meeting in Geneva made clear that representatives "were coming on the basis of (Annan's) transition plan."

Lavrov said it was "obvious that a transitional period is needed to overcome the Syrian crisis," but insisted the major powers in Geneva must focus on convincing the opposition groups to soften their demands.

Diplomatic hopes have rested on Russia to agree to a plan that would end the Assad family dynasty, which has ruled Syria for more than four decades. Russia is Syria's most important ally, protector and supplier of arms.

There are few options besides keeping up diplomatic pressure, as an international military intervention is all but ruled out in the near future. Few countries are willing to get deeply involved in such an explosive conflict, and Russia and China have pledged to veto any international attempt to intervene militarily.

Analysis: GOP sees tax opening in Obama court win

WASHINGTON (AP) -- For President Barack Obama to turn his Supreme Court victory into a clear-cut political win this fall, he must do something other candidates have failed to do: make voters care that GOP opponent Mitt Romney once embraced the health care policies he now fiercely criticizes.

If Obama can't do that, then Romney may find it easy to fire up conservative activists who despise what they label "Obamacare," while also attracting moderate voters who simply dislike it.

And the Republican will have a new anti-tax argument, thanks to the high court.

On the policy front, Thursday's Supreme Court decision was a huge victory for Obama. It's trickier politically, however, because the court upheld the health care law under Congress' power to tax people, a rationale that surprised many.

In essence, the five-justice majority said, the penalty that Americans will start paying in 2014 if they refuse to obtain health insurance amounts to a tax.

Obama has insisted the fee is not a tax. He also notes that poor people would receive subsidies to buy insurance, which amounts to a tax cut. But his lawyers cited the tax-powers argument in their Supreme Court appearance.

Romney and fellow Republicans immediately launched a line of criticism that often has been potent: Democrats - in this case, Obama and his allies in Congress - are too eager to hike taxes.

"Obamacare raises taxes on the American people by approximately $500 billion," Romney said in his brief remarks.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told Democratic lawmakers to "stand by your tax increase or stand with us to repeal and replace Obamacare."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said: "The Supreme Court has spoken. This law is a tax."

There's a political problem with that argument, Democrats quickly noted. Romney, while governor of Massachusetts, also required almost every resident to obtain insurance or pay a fee. As former Obama aide Neera Tanden put it, "If you call the mandate a tax increase, then Mitt Romney increased taxes in Massachusetts."

That might inoculate Obama from Romney's tax-hike accusations, if Democrats can make it stick. But Romney's GOP primary opponents repeatedly failed when they tried to wrap "Romneycare" around his neck.

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty reminded Republican voters that Obama "said that he designed Obamacare after Romneycare." Texas Gov. Rick Perry said, "I think Mitt is finally recognizing that the Massachusetts health care plan he passed is a huge problem for him."

Former Sen. Rick Santorum tried hardest of all. He said Romney's health care legacy made him "the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama."

Romney simply stuck to his criticisms of Obama's health law and avoided detailed discussions of its similarities to his Massachusetts initiative.

Some Democrats think Obama and his well-financed ally groups will do a much better job of painting Romney as a hypocrite or flip-flopper on health care.

Romney's GOP opponents "weren't exactly the most formidable of politicians, and they lacked the resources to really make it an issue on TV," Democratic strategist Doug Thornell said. Romney "is the godfather of the individual mandate and health reform," Thornell added, and thus ill-positioned to lead a fight on the issue.

Jim Kessler, co-founder of the Democratic-leaning group Third Way, said: "The individual mandate that Romney invented in Massachusetts is now a tax. That's a real pickle for Romney."

Republicans have options. They can have surrogates and lawmakers carry the health care battle against Obama, leaving Romney as far removed as possible.

Or it may turn out that voters don't care much about what Romney did as a one-term governor several years ago. That would free him to lead assaults on "Obamacare" with minimum damage.

If that happens, Thursday's court ruling could work against Obama's re-election hopes. Recent AP-GfK polls have found that more Americans oppose the 2010 health care law than support it. Opposition to the "individual mandate" - it would require most people to get insurance or pay a fee - was even deeper in a March poll.

Such findings delight Republican operatives. For Obama, Thursday's ruling was "probably the most damaging of all possible outcomes," GOP strategist Mike McKenna said.

"Identifying the mandate as a tax shears away all of the pretense," McKenna said. "It will energize everyone on the right, even those with deep reservations about Romney."

Another Republican campaign veteran, Terry Holt, said: "Obama might have his law, but the GOP has a cause."

Obama seemed eager to avoid the tax debate Thursday. He did not mention taxes in his 1,200-word speech before cameras.

The president's allies might be more willing to engage. If Republicans insist on calling the health insurance fee a tax, said Tanden, who now heads the Center for American Progress, "then the only person in America who has implemented that policy is Mitt Romney."

(AP) ? Preventing loquacious Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez from campaigning for re-election on the airwaves for more than three minutes isn't an easy task, but that's what opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles is demanding.

Capriles criticized his adversary on Tuesday for attempting to take political advantage of special broadcasts ahead of Venezuela's Oct. 7 presidential election. Capriles demanded the National Elections Council intervene.

The council's directors have approved campaign regulations that would prohibit television and radio messages that favor a presidential candidate to run longer than three minutes.

The new rules take effect Sunday when the campaign officially starts. It's unclear whether they will limit the president's frequent and lengthy use of special broadcasts known as "cadenas," which all networks are required to air.

HEADLINE:
THE YOUNGEST EVER SEA SHANTY PERFORMERS TO APPEAR AT THE POLPERRO MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL
BODY:
CoastNet is proud to present the performances of young people from local schools in concert on Wednesday, 20th of June from 11 to 1pm, at the Polperro Music and Arts Festival.

Students from the? Marlborough Primary School, Fourlanesend Community Primary School, Duloe CE VA Junior & Infant School and Antony CE VA School have taken part in the Lost at Sea project run by CoastNet. They have received the visits at school from local groups such as the Miner Quay Shanty Men from Looe who have taught them the words and how to sing sea shanties.

Shanties are work songs in which sailors minds were occupied in chanting while their hands were hauling or heaving to the rhythm. Interestingly, the ?call & response? shanty ?Plymouth Town? could possibly be the oldest recorded shanty, at least in English!

One of the favourite shanties of our students is ?Sammy?s gone away? that charts the progression of a young sailor from cabin boy to Captain. It is from the time of Nelson and is thought to have been sung on the journey to the battle of Trafalgar where Nelson was shot and died.

Leo Eddolls, the Lost at Sea project officer from CoastNet said ?Kids are enjoying and learning so much from the local sea shanty groups. They are looking forward to the big day?

Lost at Sea is a Heritage Lottery Funded programme that encourages young people to engage with their local history in fishing ports from Polperro to Plymouth.

CoastNet works to improve the lives of coastal communities through education, community action and social enterprise.? CoastNet is the only national charity dedicated to sustainable development of the UK?s coasts.

THE POLPERRO FESTIVAL
As well as the Sea Shanties on the schools day, the coming of Summer will be celebrated with live music, street theatre, parades, Morris Dancers, arts and crafts, drama, poetry, children?s entertainment, coastal walks, a treasure hunt and a new music day.

According to the Cornwall Tourist Board ?Polperro still has a small fishing fleet and the village is renowned for its shellfish. While you?re there try a delicious crab sandwich. Polperro?s secluded position made the village an ideal base for smuggling back in the 1700s when high taxes on commodities such as tea and salt created an illicit trade with ports on the continent?.

Leo Eddolls, the Lost at Sea Project Officer, is available for phone interview. Please contact her by email or telephone to set up a time that is convenient.

New Wyoming supercomputer expected to boost atmospheric science

CHEYENNE, Wyo. ? Here in the shortgrass prairie, where being stuck in the ways of the Old West is a point of civic pride, scientists are building a machine that will, in effect, look into the future.

This month, on a barren Wyoming landscape dotted with gopher holes and hay bales, the federal government is assembling a supercomputer 10 years in the making, one of the fastest computers ever built and the largest ever devoted to the study of atmospheric science.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research's supercomputer has been dubbed Yellowstone, after the nearby national park, but it could have been named Nerdvana. The machine will have 100 racks of servers and 72,000 core processors, so many parts that they must be delivered in the back of a 747. Yellowstone will be capable of performing 1.5 quadrillion calculations ? a quadrillion is a 1 followed by 15 zeros ? every second.

That's nearly a quarter of a million calculations, each second, for every person on Earth. In a little more than an hour, Yellowstone can do as many calculations as there are grains of sand on every beach in the world.

The study of climate and weather patterns has always been hamstrung by volatility ? by elements of chaos in the seas and the air. That challenge is most famously summed up by the "butterfly effect," the idea that the flapping of a butterfly's wings on the coast of Africa can determine whether a hurricane will strike New Orleans.

The sheer speed of Yellowstone is designed to burst through the limits of chaos theory ? the difference, allegorically, between predicting the odds of blackjack after playing five hands versus playing a million. The machine is expected to give scientists a clearer image of the state of the planet, and its future, revolutionizing the study of climate change, extreme weather events, wildfires, air pollution and more.

"These are chaotic systems, but it's just math," said Richard Loft, director of technology development at NCAR's Computational and Information Systems Laboratory. "We play statistics in the climate game. We feed in the basic laws of science, and out comes something that looks like the Earth's climate. It's an instrument. This is a mathematical telescope."

NCAR is in the business of research, not forecasting, but the tools and advances produced from its research could have a profound effect on forecasting. Armed with a high-fidelity portrait of Earth systems, scientists around the United States can begin to pinpoint the regional impact of changes in the weather and atmosphere.

Rather than warning of a tornado risk in the central U.S. between noon and 9 p.m., scientists might one day warn of a tornado risk in Woodson County, Kan., between 1 and 3 p.m. Rather than warning of a hurricane striking the coast of Texas, they hope to be able to warn of a hurricane striking the town of Freeport, with a top wind speed of 90 mph and a tidal surge of 4 1/2 feet.

That regional accuracy is particularly critical in the study of climate change. "The disaster of climate change happens on a regional scale," Loft said. "Everything is connected."

For example, once scientists use Yellowstone to help predict the melting of ice at the North Pole, which means significant change in nearby waters, they can better predict the patterns of storms that form in the Gulf of Alaska. Then Yellowstone can help predict how those storms will deposit snow atop the Sierra Nevada, down to precise changes in elevation on individual faces of mountains.

That snow will melt, and the water will run downhill ? which means Yellowstone can help predict how much water California will have to drink, even the most efficient locations to build the state's reservoirs.

"It's taking the macro information and applying it to the things that matter," said Richard Neale, an NCAR project scientist.

The computer will be housed in a futuristic, $70-million compound west of Cheyenne. The National Science Foundation, which funds NCAR, is paying $50 million of the tab. The state of Wyoming will pay for the rest. In exchange, the state will occupy a dedicated chunk of the computer's power and memory. University of Wyoming scientists hope to use Yellowstone to advance "carbon sequestration," a promising method of storing harmful gases underground to combat climate change and open new avenues in industry.

Yellowstone will replace NCAR's Bluefire system, a supercomputer in its own right, though this one will have roughly 30 times the throughput of the old system.

Yellowstone will hold 600 sets of atmospheric data in its vast memory bank ? temperatures, humidity, wind motion, rainfall. Information gleaned from the world's data-collection systems ? buoys in the ocean, wind monitors fastened to the top of telephone poles ? will be added to the archive.

The Wyoming compound is one of the most energy-efficient sites of its kind. Heat generated by the computer will be recycled to warm workers' offices, and pipes carrying the coolant water will have few 90-degree angles; pumping water through pipes that bend at gentle angles requires less energy.

The bulk of the machine will arrive at the 24-acre compound this month. Once the racks are lashed together, scientists will spend weeks "basically trying to break the system," said Anke Kamrath, director of operations and services at NCAR's systems lab. If they can't, they'll open it to researchers from across the nation, probably in August. Scientists will make proposals to book an "allocation" on the computer, similar to using minutes on a cellphone plan. Most will access the computer remotely.

Many are champing at the bit. Some hope to predict migration patterns of animals, others the success and failure of certain farm crops, others specific hillsides that would be the most efficient spots for wind turbines.

NCAR scientist Michael Wiltberger studies solar flares, superheated gas that emanates from the sun, with the potential to be enormously disruptive on Earth.

"Right now, we don't know why a particular configuration of the magnetic field of the sun is going to erupt," Wiltberger said. "We need to know ? and now we can run millions times more models to provide meaningful predictions."

Armed with better predictions of what will happen when solar flares reach Earth ? and where, precisely, they will occur ? scientists could warn energy companies to protect against power surges. Global positioning systems could be disrupted, so farmers that use GPS to map crops could be warned to suspend planting operations.

NCAR senior scientist Morris Weisman specializes in a tricky corner of science: severe, high-impact weather events, which are by definition so rare that they are difficult to predict. "Scientifically non-satisfying" is how Weisman puts it ? but with such a leap in computer modeling, he said, scientists could theoretically predict an extreme weather event "within an hour, within a few kilometers."

"We can conceive of that now," he said. "It's really exciting."

Loft marveled that such a dizzying array of experiments will be done using time-tested and sometimes rudimentary math ? 19th century laws of thermal dynamics, rules of mechanics devised by Isaac Newton after an apple supposedly bonked him on the head and got him thinking about gravity. Yellowstone will use the same, just a whole lot of it at once.

"Newton was thinking about apples, and the moon. He never would have imagined that the same principles would have dictated the behavior of hurricanes," Loft said. "This science stuff works."

The scientists behind Yellowstone shrug at a bitter reality: cutting edge doesn't last long in their world. The Wyoming facility was built with enough space to accommodate the next generation of computer, which is already being contemplated, before this one is put together.

"We won't be cool for long," Loft said. "This business is ephemeral. There's not much room for nostalgia."

IDC: Microsoft Windows Phone to pass Apple's iOS By 2016

Analysts at IDC painted a pretty picture for Microsoft Wednesday, predicting Windows Phone will surpass Apple's iOS in terms of worldwide market share by 2016.

The projection, which echoes a similar report published by IDC last year that pegged Windows Phone to beat out Apple by 2015, suggests Android will be the most dominant smartphone platform in four years, accounting for 52.9 percent of the world?s smartphone subscriber base. Microsoft's Windows Phone 7/Windows Mobile OS will be next in line with 19.2 percent, and Apple's iOS will fall to third with 19 percent.

Though Windows' projected 0.2 percent edge over iOS may seem minimal, a 19.2 percent share of the market would represent a whopping 46.2 percent compound annual growth rate for the OS over the next four years, which is more than both the Android and iOS growth rate combined, according to IDC.

[Related: 8 'iPhone 5' Rumors To Keep An Eye On]

Today, Windows Phone only accounts for 5.2 percent of the global smartphone market, compared to Android's 61 percent and iOS' 20.5 percent. According to IDC, much of the growth that Windows Phone is poised to see over the next four years will stem from the success of Nokia, the Finnish handset maker that runs the software on the majority of its smartphones.

"Windows Phone 7/Windows Mobile will gain share despite a slow start," IDC wrote in the report. "Windows Phone 7/Windows Mobile will be aided by Nokia's strength in key emerging markets. IDC expects it to be the No. 2 OS with more than 19 percent share in 2016, assuming Nokia's foothold in emerging markets is maintained."

Exactly how Nokia will fare in emerging markets over the next four years remains to be seen. In April, the company reported a loss of $1.8 billion on revenue of $9.7 billion, which was down 30 percent year-over-year. Much of this loss was attributed to "greater-than-expected competitive challenges" in the mobile market.

Stephen Elop, Nokia CEO, said the company's new Windows-based Lumia devices, in particular, have met with success in the U.S. but have been struggling to gain traction on a larger, global scale.

"The actual sales results have been mixed," Elop said of the company's Lumia line. "We exceeded expectations in markets including the United States, but establishing momentum in certain markets including the UK has been more challenging."

While iOS and Windows Phone grapple for the runner-up spot, IDC said that Google?s Android will be able to retain its market-share lead over the next four years due to its use by a large pool of OEMs, including HTC and Samsung.

Gas BBQ Grills ? Buy Quality Or Else! ? Food and Drinks

If you are looking at gas BBQ grills you might want to be very cautious about which one you invest in. It pays in the long run to buy a good, quality one.

Many of the cheap grills that are made today, look and have many of the features of the gas BBQ?s that cost hundreds and even thousands more. They are usually sold in big-box stores and on the internet.

They may come in stainless steel, with one or more side burners, infrared burners. They look impressive and well-built, but most are not.

They are not designed for heavy use and will not hold up, or perform as well as well-built gas grill. Remember you get what you pay for.

If you are trying to save a few bucks, forget it, you?ll probably be sorry you didn?t spend a little more to buy quality a gas BBQ, maybe even sacrificing some features that you would have liked to have.

If you purchase a cheap one you run the risk of having to figure out a way to transport it to the local dump, or having to bribe your local garbage pickup person to haul it away for you after using only for a short while.

And, you will ask yourself, ?Why didn?t I buy a good one to start with??

In 1989, I invested in a top-of-the-line gas BBQ that I had converted to natural gas.

At the time I paid top dollar for it. I still have that BBQ. And, I use it all year around!

I live in an adverse climate for barbecuing during the winter months. Of course, I have taken care of barbecue. It is kept under a covered area, and I put a heavy duty cover on it when not in use. Further, it is maintained and cleaned on a regular basis to keep it in tip-top-shape.

Now, had I bought a gas BBQ grill from the local ?big-box? store for a couple of hundred bucks, I don?t think I would have had the same luck.

In essence, you may have to spend around five hundred dollars or more to get a good one that will last. Plus, you will get more features and a better warranty.

Cheap gas BBQ grillsare more of a hassle than you may want. Read all the reviews, spend the money and get quality. You will thank yourself for doing so.
