A 2011 study of birds near Chernobyl in Ukraine found that their sperm is being damaged by harmful reactive oxygen species, which may have been created by radiation from the country's nuclear disaster in 1986. But according to calculations by Jim Smith at the University of Portsmouth, UK, the radiation at Chernobyl couldn't have produced enough reactive oxygen species to explain the observed harm (Biology Letters, DOI: 10.1098/rsbl.2012.0150). The same is true for Fukushima, he says.

The biggest effects at Chernobyl are seen in barn swallows, which rely on farming activities for their food. Smith thinks the evacuation of the area may instead explain the swallows' plight.

That doesn't convince Anders M?ller at the University of Paris-South, France, an author on the 2011 study. He points to studies that suggest declines in farming affect barn swallows but don't stop them reproducing.

A final answer may come next year from the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety, which has launched its own study of birds in the Fukushima contamination zone.

But the birds aren't home free: radiation harms wildlife in other ways, such as damaging DNA.

Now that we?ve got that out of the way, I need to urge you, single friend, to NOT let your singleness be stolen from you.

What??

Yep. I think singleness is something to treasure, enjoy, make the most of. (I don?t mean that there is anyone out there who aims to ?take? people?s singleness through crazy, serial, polygamist dating. Hollywood: you?re welcome. Oh wait?)

I am single. I know it can be difficult. I wrote to you a while ago about things that singles are not, which included slow-cooking chocolate cakes,?sedate hidden treasure on a pirate?s map and eh, caterpillars.?I know there is a lot of pressure to be un-single. I know you might feel like the ?odd one out?. I know it?s lonely at times. I know you would like to have someone to share the big happenings and the little ins and outs with. It?s completely fine to acknowledge these things (there are more?what should I have included? What is difficult about being single? Let me know!) and healthy to do so, but?

Singleness is SUCH a cool thing to have (yes, remember, ?you are single?you are not Single? etc?? I think the easiest way to define it is as something we ?have?, rather than what we ?are?.) We have time and energy that we can devote to dreaming big dreams and fulfilling them that we will not have to devote in this particular way when/if we are in relationships/marriages. Of course marriage isn?t a crazy cage that locks people away dreamless and exhausted ? and friends who are in relationships or marriages, you know that I don?t mean that you are now useless or less effective than what single people can be. Indeed, there are different ways in which you can change the world and bless people when you join up with another human being. You have told me, though, of how life changes when you?re doing life closely with another human being (or 2, or 6) and we have agreed that singleness is a unique period in someone?s life.??(On my grouping marriage and relationships: obviously these two relational situations ARE different. Upto you to interpret the implications of what I?m saying if you?re in a relationship ? the seriousness/depth/commitment of these vary so much.)

Friends who are single, we simply MUST make the most of the free time, the energy to spend on pretty much whatever we choose, the room and freedom to dream and point ourselves in so many directions.

If you read any of my other posts, you know that I?m greatly concerned by the reality of human trafficking and spend time and energy on trying to fight it. It mightn?t be such an issue for you. But as you read this, there are things that have blossomed or still may be seeds that are in you, that need you to be awoken to, that you need to fight for.

There are people who need you. There are projects that could use your specific talents. There are towns and cities that need you to hold them up for a while. There is a purpose for you that goes farther than what you can imagine, and it does not begin when you find ?The One?; indeed, NOW is a great time to engage with it. If the average age of marriage is somewhere between 25 and 30, we spend a very short time being single in the grand scheme of things. Yes, take reassurance in this if you must, but also take from it a sense of urgency: let?s get moving and making the most of it.

Don?t waste your time and energy worrying about why you are single. Don?t waste it making lists of what you look for in a guy or a girl. Don?t waste it stalking members of the opposite gender on Facebook (yes, YOU!)

To take a step further for those of us who are Christians (if you?re not, feel free to listen in). I actually think Satan uses singleness as a way to distract people, to make them feel inadequate, insecure, frustrated. Don?t let him. There is SO much you can be doing, and he isn?t happy about it. The attack is strong.?Don?t let him win. Life is short. Singleness is even shorter. There is MUCH to be done.

In essence, friends, please use your singleness wisely? I wasn?t going to go there, but I think I might: singleness, while difficult, is a gift that can be used for great things. Please make the most of it.

Extortion, Capture, Looting, Propaganda. Our Modern Finance Industry

First, let?s get something very clearly understood:? More than three years after the Great Recession, all of our major banks, as well as the major banks in Europe, remain insolvent.? From Yves Smith?s brilliant book, Econned, How Unenlightened Self Interest Undermined Democracy and Corrupted Capitalism.

?Andrew Haldane, the Executive Director for Financial Stability at the Bank of England, concluded that it was impossible for the financial services industry to pay for the damage it wrought in the global debacle.? The lowest plausible estimate of the total costs that he could come up with, amortized over 20 years, still resulted in a first year?s bill that exceeded the total market capitalization of the biggest banks.?

It took 40 years to unwind a regulatory structure that was the envy of the world.? That regulatory discipline allowed America to become the world?s greatest manufacturer.? Common sense regulations,? forged in the heat of the Great Depression and responsible for a long period of economic growth widely shared by the majority of citizens, were systematically dismantled.

As the dismantling progressed the nation?s financial industry grew in size and profitability.? Once only 8% of the economy, it soared to 25%.?? In terms of total corporate profits, finance grabbed more than 40% of profits.? At the core of this expansion were a new class of financial ?innovations? called derivatives.? Layered over traditional financial instruments like bonds, stocks, insurance contracts, commodity futures and related options, these derivatives exponentially increased the amount of money going into finance and, for all intents and purposes, dramatically under-priced risk.? Derivatives had the nefarious effect of funding debt that was hugely under-priced, causing trillions of dollars in ?bets? to be made on all aspects of finance.

It wasn?t just in housing mortgages either.? This surge in under-priced debt went everywhere:? Student loans, car loans, merger and acquisition funding, sovereign debt, insurance contracts?everywhere?you name the financial function and this explosion of liquidity drove down interest rates to the point where those rates couldn?t come close to covering repayment problems or other risks.

The only solution is structural change that reduces the size and interconnectedness of the major actors.? Given the fact that these ?major actors? provide the primary funding for political campaigns, including millions of dollars in political advertising aimed at influencing the public?s understanding and perception of events, efforts to make structural changes face huge political hurdles.

• Shrink the use of derivatives, most specifically so-called credit default swaps (CDS).? These instruments are pure bets on insurance contracts.? They avoid the ?insurable interest? rule of insurance (you can?t pay for insurance on your neighbor?s house, for one obvious example, because you have an incentive to burn it down!) and have no legitimate economic purpose other than being a fee generating machine for the financial services industry.?? These derivatives still exist and are still exempt from regulation, believe it or not.? They are so pervasive inside bank balance sheets, an outright ban is probably not wise.? Regulating them, however, will end the cowboy type of behaviour common with their use.? Regulating them will increase their cost, in other words, and limit their use.? This will also restore more accurate risk assessment.
• Limit guarantees to critically important banking and capital market activities by installing a modified version of the Great Depression era, Glass Steagall legislation.? Commercial banks would be limited to making traditional loans and using plain vanilla hedges.? They could also engage in pure fee businesses such as those of being custodians or trustees.? Any use of CDS derivatives would be limited to regulated CDS insurance subsidiaries.? Investment banks would become more strictly regulated although their traditional functions would remain unchanged: Underwriting and distributing equities and bonds and market making; CDS activity limited to regulated insurance subsidiaries; mergers and acquisitions; asset management providing the asset manager does not rely in any way on funding from the investment bank.? Proprietary trading and the trading and sale of over the counter (OTC) derivatives would be prohibited, however.? Lending to hedge funds, save against specific positions on conservative terms, would be barred, as would warehouse facilities and bridge loans.
• Tighten other regulations to close gaps and extend liability to responsible parties.? These regulations should not be rules-based, but principles-based, a.k.a. ?if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it?s probably a duck.?? A low tolerance policy towards ?innovation? designed to evade standards would be more effective than any attempts to craft airtight regulations.
• Restore secondary liability.? In 1994 the US Supreme Court disallowed suits against advisors like accountants and lawyers aiding and abetting frauds.? In criminal law the guy who drives the getaway vehicle is an accessory, why isn?t an accounting firm who prepared misleading financial statements an accessory to fraud?
• Increase the budgets of regulators.? More auditors are needed who can sniff out that something is not right.? The claim that everyone who knows the inner workings will be in the private sector and won?t want to be a regulator is specious.? There are many examples of experienced private market actors who decide to become regulators.? Sometimes for, God forbid, altruistic reasons!?? The enforcement team would need to attract only a few of these experienced individuals to make a great difference.
• ?Free market? mania, quoted from Econned:? ?Powerful business interests, largely captive regulators and officials, and a lapdog media took up this amorphous, malleable idea and made it a Trojan horse for a three-decades long campaign to tear down the rules that constrained the finance sector.? The result has been a massive transfer of wealth, with its centerpiece the greatest theft from the public purse in history.? This campaign has been far too consistent and calculated to brand it with the traditional label, ?spin.?? This manipulation of public perception can only be called propaganda.? Only? when we, the public, are able to call the underlying realities by their proper names?extortion, capture, looting, propaganda?can we begin to root them out.?

Do you wish to become and expert and have specialized knowledge? Being an expert means you are proficient, knowledgeable and skilled. There's always room for another specialist, regardless of which industry you are in.

There are many advantages and benefits of becoming an expert. You will create many followers and you are able to influence people to your way of thinking. People will look forward to hearing your views and regard you as a role model. You become more marketable and the demand for your service will increase.

There are also people whose aims are to become skilled at something like playing Sudoku or video games. There's nothing wrong with that because everyone has her or his personal preference. But if you want to acquire monetary gains, influence and personal growth, become an expert in something that helps and will benefit other people.

It will take a lot of your time, efforts and self discipline to reach the competent level when you can call yourself an authority, master, guru or a professional. Not many people are successful to attain this status because they usually will give up because it's time consuming and requires a high level of perseverance and persistence.

To become skilled at something you must acquire lots of knowledge. The internet is a great source of information. You can learn from books, video and audio programs, get a coach or find a mentor. The understanding will lead you to take consistent action.

Learn from professionals in various fields and industries. When you associate with successful people, you will learn a lot and tend to become like them. A positive environment will positively affect the way you work and think. And you will do less mistake when you learn from successful people and emulate their strategies.

Once you have acquired the knowledge, practice it diligently. Repeat it over and over again. Discipline yourself to practice until you become good and get it right. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Kei Kamara scored on a diving header late in the first half and Sporting Kansas City beat the David Beckham-less Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 on Saturday to improve to 5-0.

Sporting is the first club to begin a season with five regulation wins since Los Angeles opened 12-0 in 1996, Major League soccer's inaugural year. Kansas City also extended its home unbeaten streak to five matches against Los Angeles, which is 1-3 after winning the MLS Cup last season.

Kansas City has four shutouts in five matches, and goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen did not have to make a save against the Galaxy.

Beckham has been plagued by a series of nagging injuries and didn't make the trip. Landon Donovan returned from a quadriceps injury that kept him out of Los Angeles' 3-1 home loss to New England.

Kamara scored his third goal of the season, connecting in the 40th minute off Bobby Convey's first assist with his new team. Kamara beat right back Sean Franklin to Convey's cross at the edge of the 6-yard box and curled the ball inside the far post.

RED BULLS 4, CREW 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Thierry Henry and Kenny Cooper each scored twice to help New York beat Columbus.

Cooper scored in the third and 13th minutes to give him six goals this season, and Henry added goals in the 40th and 90th to regain the MLS goals lead with seven.

The two forwards have scored all but one goal this season for the Red Bulls (3-2).

New York won its third straight behind rookie goalkeeper Ryan Meara. He had seven saves but lost his shutout in the 89th minute when Chad Marshall scored on a header off Kirk Urso's corner kick.

The Crew dropped to 2-2.

IMPACT 2, TORONTO FC 1

MONTREAL (AP) - Sinisa Ubiparipovic and Andrew Wenger scored to lead Montreal to its first Major League Soccer victory.

Ubiparipovic, making his first appearance, scored in the 17th minute in front of 23,120 spectators at Olympic Stadium. Wenger, the Impact's first overall draft pick, made it 2-0 in the 81st minute.

Montreal improved to 1-4-1.

Danny Koevermans scored in the 88th for Toronto (0-4-0), which was reduced to 10 men after defender Logan Emory was sent off in the 65th minute.

EARTHQUAKES 3, WHITECAPS 1

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Chris Wondolowski scored twice and Alan Gordon added a goal in a 10-minute span midway through the second half to help San Jose beat Vancouver.

San Jose improved to 4-1, while Vancouver dropped to 2-1-2.

Wondolowski tied it at 1 in the 68th minute, Gordon gave the Earthquakes the lead in the 72nd, and Wondolowski completed the scoring in the 78th with his sixth goal of the season.

Sebastien Le Toux scored for Vancouver in the 49th minute.

Wondolowski's first goal ended the Whitecaps' season-opening shutout streak at 427 minutes, six more than previous mark set by New York in 2007.

SOUNDERS 0, UNITED 0, TIE

WASHINGTON (AP) - D.C. United stretched its unbeaten streak to three matches with the draw against Seattle.

After combining for 21 goals in their previous six league meetings, the teams had the first scoreless draw in the four-year season series. Seattle also beat D.C. 2-1 in Washington in the 2009 U.S. Open Cup Final.

Seattle is 2-1-1, and United 1-2-2.

REAL SALT LAKE 2, RAPIDS 0

SANDY, Utah (AP) - Alvaro Saboria and Fabian Espindola scored to lead Real Salt Lake past Colorado.

Real Salt Lake (5-1-0), alone atop the Western Conference standings, extended its unbeaten streak against the Rapids (3-2-0) to seven games, with its last loss in the series coming in May 2009.

The win gave Salt Lake a leg up in its bid to keep the Rocky Mountain Cup for a sixth straight season.

It also sets up a showdown next week with undefeated Sporting Kansas City, which beat defending champion Los Angeles earlier in the day.

Espindola's goal in the 57th minute put him in a tie with former standout Robbie Findley for Real Salt Lake's all-time lead in MLS goals scored with 29.

CHIVAS USA 2, TIMBERS 1

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Nick LaBrocca's goal in the 82nd minute rallied Chivas USA past Portland.

Captain Alejandro Moreno evened the match with a header off a perfectly placed cross from sub Ryan Smith in the 48th minute for Chivas USA (2-3-0), which had come into the game with only one goal this season.

LaBrocca's header for the victory also came off a cross from Smith.

The Timbers (1-3-1) failed to hold on to a lead for the second straight game. Portland allowed Western Conference-leading Real Salt Lake to score twice in the final minutes for a 3-2 victory last Saturday at Jeld-Wen Field.

Scottish striker Kris Boyd got his second goal of the season in the 17th minute for Portland.
