Cellphones Don't Raise Risk of Brain Tumors in Kids, Study Finds

Put down that cell phone, child! It'll rot your brain and give you cancer!

No reason to put the fear of God into your iPhone-loving kid. We can't comment on the brain rot, but a new study does show that children who use cell phones have no greater risk of getting brain cancer than kids who don't use them, Reuters reports.

Researchers looked at brain tumor patients ages 7 to 19, to gauge their risk of getting cancer from cellphones, and found the patients weren't any more apt to be phone fanatics than the control subjects who were cancer-free, according to the news service.

"If mobile phone use would be a risk factor, you'd expect cancer patients to have a higher amount of usage," Professor Martin Roosli, who conducted the study, published this week in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, tells Reuters. The research was partly funded by cellphone operators, the news service adds, although they had no part in the study's design, analysis or interpretation of data.

The World Health Organization said in May that cellphone use could increase the risk of some types of brain tumors, Reuters reports. But this study didn't find a connection.

"What we found was that there was no (significant) difference in the amount of use," Roosli tells the news service, adding that any risk "would be a really small risk."

Roosli tells Reuters future studies should look at longer-term use of cellphone use among kids.

"(This study) provides quite some evidence that use of less than five years does not increase the chance of a brain tumor, but naturally we don't have a lot of long-term users," he tells the news service.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) ? The jury in John Edwards campaign finance corruption trial has started its eighth day of deliberations.

The jurors were scheduled to work an extra 30 minutes on Wednesday and Thursday, unless they finish first. The judge in the trial said the jury will leave early on Friday to accommodate jurors' family commitments that include attending high school graduations.

The former presidential candidate faces six charges involving nearly $1 million provided by two wealthy donors to help hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.

The judge met behind closed doors Tuesday with attorneys to talk about a problem with a juror, but it's still not clear what was discussed.

Wall Street Journal columnist William McGurn applauds the decision by the University of Notre Dame to join in the lawsuit against the HHS contraceptive mandate. McGurn points out that with Notre Dame among the plaintiffs, it is impossible to charge that the suit is being filed only by conservative groups hostile to President Obama; after all, Notre Dame?s administration has been roundly condemned by conservatives for inviting Obama to speak at commencement.

McGurn goes on to discuss the widening gap between the Obama administration and Catholic voters. He notes that in the past, Democratic presidential candidates (including Obama) have formed campaign efforts to reach out specifically to Catholics. ?The lack of prominence of a similar Catholic effort today points to the obvious: Where can Joe Biden or other Catholic surrogates go where they will not now be on the defensive??

Nigeria students protest over name change

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? More than 1,000 university students and unemployed youths have taken over a main artery leading into the business center of Nigeria's largest city.

The students took over the third mainland bridge Wednesday morning, halting traffic into Lagos' islands, and commandeered at least four buses to block traffic lanes. They were protesting a decision Tuesday by President Goodluck Jonathan to change the name of the city's flagship university.

Students sang and waved palm fronds as police stood by. Passengers stepped off buses and walked to work in the islands.

Jonathan said the University of Lagos ? known as UNILAG ? would be renamed Moshood Abiola University in honor of a political prisoner who died in jail over a decade ago.

Spanish PM insists banks won't need EU rescue

MADRID (AP) ? Conservative Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy insisted Monday that the country's banking sector would not need an international rescue as concern over the bailout of nationalized lender Bankia sent its stock price plummeting while Spain's borrowing costs soared.

"There will be no rescue of the Spanish banking sector," Rajoy told a press conference.

However, he added that the government had no choice but to bail out Bankia, which has been crippled by Spain's real estate slump.

"We took the bull by the horns because the alternative was collapse," said Rajoy, stressing that Bankia clients' savings were now safer than ever.

Bankia, Spain's fourth-largest bank, is estimated to have ?32 billion in toxic assets and was effectively nationalized earlier this month when the government converted ?4.5 billion in rescue funds it gave last June into shares.

The lender's shares fell 28 percent on opening in Madrid on Monday ? Bankia's first day back on the stock exchange following its announcement Friday that it would need the ?19 billion ($23.8 billion) in state aid to shore itself up against its bad loans, a far bigger bailout than expected. The shares, which recovered slightly in the afternoon, closed 13.4 percent lower at ?1.36.

Bank of Spain estimates show Spain's lenders are sitting on some ?180 billion ($233 billion) in assets that could cause them losses. The government fears the cost of rescuing the country's vulnerable banks could overwhelm its own finances, which are already strained by a double-dip recession and an unemployment rate of nearly 25 percent, and force it to seek a rescue by the rest of Europe.

Among the chief concerns surrounding Bankia's request for state aid ? the largest in Spanish history ? is just how Spain plans to fund it. The country's borrowing costs have risen sharply over the past few weeks.

On Monday, Spain's interest rate, or yield, for 10-year bonds on the secondary market ? a key indicator of market confidence ? rose 0.16 percentage points to close at 6.45 percent. Rajoy said this had more to do with broader concerns about Europe and Greece and dismissed suggestions it had anything to do with Bankia.

A rate of 7 percent is considered unsustainable over the long term and there is concern that Spain might soon be pushed join the ranks of Greece, Ireland and Portugal and seek an international bailout.

The Prime Minister said that the government had not yet decided how it would proceed in funding the Bankia bailout.

However, the Economy Ministry said earlier Monday that it is considering injecting government debt into Bankia's accounts. The bank could then turn to the European Central Bank and use those bonds as collateral to receive cash for the recapitalization.

Analysts said that such a technique would only prove to investors that the country is having difficulties raising money on the international debt markets and would therefore make them even more reluctant to buy Spanish debt.

"It sends a signal of a lack of confidence," said Mark Miller of Capital Economics in London.

Oscar Moreno of Madrid brokerage Renta4 said the government has little choice: either use this uncommon technique or simply ask the European Union for money to bail out the banking sector ? which Rajoy has vehemently ruled out as unnecessary.

Moreno said Bankia's share price drop ? and the rising bond yield ? showed investors the Spanish banking sector's woes are getting worse. Only last week, for instance, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said the government would inject about ?9 billion into Bankia.

"Basically, what the investor sees is that, with what has emerged with Bankia, more money is going to be needed than what was originally stated" in two government decrees ordering banks to put aside a total of some ?80 billion in provisions to cushion against losses from real estate, Moreno added.

Spain's rocky financial situation has been made worse due to overspending by its semiautonomous regions. One of the regional governments, Catalonia, called for financial assistance last week, claiming it was running out of options to refinance its debts.

Asked about the fragile state of finances of some of Spain's regions, Rajoy said, "We are not going to let any region or financial entity fall because otherwise the country would fall."

Concern about the health of Europe's banks is a key constituent of the region's financial crisis. While Spanish banks suffer mainly from soured real estate investments, they and their counterparts across Europe also hold massive amounts of shaky government bonds. As the financial crisis worsens, those bonds lose value, hurting the banks.

The big fear is that if Greece eventually leaves the euro, confidence in other financially weak countries like Spain and Italy could fall, causing the value of their bonds to drop. Ultimately, the worry is that could undermine confidence in the system and create bank runs.

To avert such a disastrous scenario, financial experts are increasingly calling for a Europe-wide support system for the banks.

Updated at?1:39 p.m. ET: The remains of Tropical Storm Beryl soaked beach vacations and some Memorial Day remembrance services in southern Georgia and northern Florida on Monday and knocked out power to tens of thousands, though emergency officials said it hasn't brought any major damage.

The storm made landfall just after midnight Monday near Jacksonville Beach in Florida with near-hurricane-strength winds of 70 mph (113 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center. Sustained winds had died down to about 35 mph (55 kph), leading forecasters to downgrade the storm to a tropical depression and cancel all warnings and watches less than 11 hours after it made land.

Joyce Connolly, of Hurricane, W.Va., a doctor of theology, came to Jacksonville Beach for the holiday and the Jacksonville Theological Seminary's graduation. Connolly said she and her daughters had watched the weather forecasts about Beryl, but thought they would be OK.

"It definitely changed our vacation to unfortunate circumstances that we're not happy with, but you just have to live with it," Connolly said. On Sunday, she said they "actually walked over here on the little walkway, the boardwalk, and the wind was just too bad."

Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown asked people to stay indoors and safe.?"We don't want anyone going out, riding around, because it's still dangerous out there," Brown said at a Monday morning briefing, according to News4Jax.com. "This is going to be with us for a while."

Though high winds were no longer a factor by late Monday morning, steady rain was expected to continue through Monday night along the I-75 corridor, Weather Channel meteorologist Tom Moore said. Strong thunderstorms were expected to develop in central Florida and continue back into southeast Georgia. Localized flooding will continue, Moore said.

Seven hundred people were treated for heat symptom's at Sunday's Indianapolis 500. The Weather Channel's Mike Cantore reports.

Bands of rain sprayed Georgia's 100-mile coast, where veterans groups braved the weather as they marched ahead with traditional graveside observances for Memorial Day. At Savannah's historic Bonaventure Cemetery, where a plot reserved for veterans had small American flags at each tombstone, the downpour paused just as a crowd of about 100 starting arriving.

"When we were setting up, I had a different shirt on and I got soaked to the skin. My socks and my underwear probably are, too," said Jim Grismer, commander of American Legion Post 135 in Savannah. "I had so many people trying to talk me into moving it inside. But I said then you can't have the live firing salute and the flag raising."

Robert Schulz, an 80-year-old former Marine who served in the Korean War, held a folded umbrella in one hand as he saluted with the other during the service. Schulz said he and his wife briefly considered skipping the ceremony for the first time in 10 years.

"I said it would be terrible if nobody showed up," Barbara Schulz said. "We had to come for our veterans."

Except for ruining holiday plans, the rain was welcome on the Georgia coast, which has been parched by persistent drought. In McIntosh County south of Savannah, emergency management chief Ray Parker said a few roadways had been flooded for a brief time but the ground was quickly soaking up the 1 to 2 inches of rainfall that had fallen so far.

"We've needed it for a long time," said Parker, who said the worst damage in his county had been caused by trees falling on two homes overnight. "We were lucky that we didn't get 3 to 4 inches in 30 minutes. Most of it soaked right in before it had a chance to run off. It fell on an empty sponge."

A frontal system coming south from the Great Lakes is expected to push weakened Beryl into the Atlantic Ocean later in the week. Georgia Power reported about 2,900 people were without power Monday morning. Jacksonville city officials say 20,000 were without power and bus service was canceled because of so many flooded roads, downed power lines and trees.

Streets in Jacksonville Beach were unusually vacant. Bands of blinding rain alternated with dry conditions.

Taylor Anderson, captain of Jacksonville Beaches' American Red Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corps, said he was coordinating safety procedures with local government officials. The beach was closed, but before it was on Sunday, lifeguards over and over again had to warn people to get out of the water, he said.

"Now that the storm's finally onshore and people can see that it's so dangerous and the winds and the current are up, people are lot more hesitant to go in, more so than yesterday," Anderson said.

The weather system also would likely complicate things for returning holiday travelers, some of whom had to scrap their beach and camping trips early because of the weather. Cumberland Island National Seashore off the Georgia coast will be closed at least through Tuesday and park Superintendent Fred Boyles said campers were asked to leave the area Sunday. He said the park does not seem to have serious damage.

In northeast Florida, several Memorial Day events were canceled, including one honoring veterans at the St. Augustine National Cemetery and a parade in Palatka.

"I don't mean to sound mushy, but today is Memorial Day and I hate that it ruined some plans," said Glynn County, Ga., emergency management director Jay Wiggins. "But that's just the nature of the weather." His county between Savannah and Jacksonville also had some downed trees and power outages, but there the rain is also welcome.

"I know it had a lot of folks worried, but it certainly will help us," he said.

Beryl was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts, with some areas getting as much as a foot. Forecasters said the storm surge and high tide could bring 2 to 4 feet of flooding in northeastern Florida and Georgia, and 1 to 2 feet in southern South Carolina.

Officials reported no serious injuries, but the Coast Guard said crews in Charleston Harbor in South Carolina rescued three people and a dog from a sinking recreational vessel late Sunday morning.

The blueprint of all living beings is stored in their genetic material. In higher organisms this is stored in the well-protected cell nucleus. "Here a kind of copier works around the clock to make copies of the information needed at the time," says first author Jan Peter Siebrasse from the Institute for Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Bonn. The copies contain the information which the cells need to produce vital enzymes or other cell building materials. These copies consist of messenger RNA which travels on random paths to the membrane of the cell nucleus and from there through the nuclear pores into the cytoplasm which fills out the cells like jello.

Stringent quality control at the pore

The working group has found out that the messenger RNA lingers briefly at the pores in the membrane of the nucleus before it is finally transported out ? presumably for a final "quality control" or simply because it has to adjust in order to leave via the pore exit. The export process lasts in total only a few hundredths of a second to several seconds. "In all likelihood, the process needs much longer for larger, voluminous messenger RNA molecules than for smaller ones," adds Prof. Ulrich Kubitscheck, head of the working group Biophysical Chemistry and senior author of the publication.

Interestingly enough, only about every fourth collision between arriving messenger RNA and the cell nucleus leads to a successful export. Here, two kinds of processes can be distinguished: On the one hand, brief collisions with the nuclear membrane where presumably no pore is hit, and, on the other hand, those transports that are slowly aborted perhaps on account of a deficient quality control.

RNA is packed in a suitcase made of "protein"

The RNA is packed in a type of "suitcase" made of proteins for transporting. "And it is quite a chunk," grins Prof. Kubitscheck. This is why some of his colleagues presume there are helpers on the outside of the cell's nucleus which pull the "suitcase" through the pores, a theory which the professional physicist together with the molecular biologist Jan Peter Siebrasse are currently investigating

Just what exactly happens en route from the copier to the pores has been clarified in recent years among others by Prof. Kubitscheck's working group at the University of Bonn. "Key experiments on this were undertaken by the biologist Dr. Roman Veith, whose doctorate thesis was awarded this year's Dr. Edmund ter Meer Ph.D. thesis prize from the university society," reports Prof. Kubitscheck. For these experiments the messenger RNA was altered so that it glowed when illuminated with a laser beam. This enabled the researchers to trace the path of individual molecules containing copies of the genetic material in living buccal gland cells of a mosquito type with up to 500 pictures per second. A light microscope with a high speed camera made the observation possible.

Researchers constructed special light microscope

Once the transport processes between the "copier" and the cell nuclear membrane were understood, Prof. Kubitscheck and his colleagues turned their attention in recent years to the direct transport process through the nuclear pores. In order to observe this process, they took a number of years to construct a highly sensitive light microscope which works on the basis of target illumination. It creates delicate pictures of living samples and, in the process of taking pictures with high frequency, creates an unusually strong contrast.

Process is of fundamental biological interest

The question of how the messenger RNA enters the cell from the cell nucleus is of fundamental interest in biology, a fact Prof. Thoru Pederson (University of Massachusetts Medical School) underscores in his comment which accompanies the article paper presented by the Bonn-based scientists. In recent years, there have been two publications on this performed by working groups in the USA and Israel. In these studies, however, the messenger RNA has been altered with additives making the molecules at least double their volume. By contrast, the Bonn-based working group modified the messenger RNA in a negligible way, as Prof. Pederson determined.

The US Preventive Services Task Force just released it?s updated recommendation to healthcare providers; they recommend against PSA-based prostate cancer screening. Why? Doesn?t screening for prostate cancer save lives? Yes, for every 1,000 men aged 55-69 who are screened for 11 years, 1 life will be saved. Some prostate cancers are indeed harmful. The problem is, most prostate cancers are not harmful, and we have a hard time telling the difference. As a result, 30-40 of these 1,000 men will be harmed from treatment; most of these 30-40 men will develop erectile dysfunction or urinary incontinence, about 2 will have a heart problem like a heart attack due to treatment, and 1 will develop a serious blood clot. Some will even die from surgical treatment.

Is it worth it? If you are the one that is saved, of course it is worth it. But as a family doctor, I can tell you that erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence are quite disturbing to men, and most of them would never have been hurt from the prostate cancer.

Note that doing a screening PSA is not the same as checking a PSA in someone who has had prostate cancer or has symptoms that you are trying to figure out.

Bottom line: if you are worried about prostate cancer enough to take the relatively large risk for relatively little benefit, by all means talk with your healthcare provider about it. If you are not worried enough to take such a gamble, wait until we figure out how to treat prostate cancer without harm or how to figure out which prostate cancers are actually going to be harmful someday.

Energy bill to boost clean power

The government will publish its long-awaited draft energy bill later, designed to encourage major investment in clean energy generation and help increase security of supply.

The bill is expected to outline long-term contracts to encourage investment in nuclear and renewable energy.

But Energy Secretary Ed Davey told the BBC that there would be no public subsidies for new nuclear plants.

Critics say the measures will result in higher energy bills for consumers.

The government needs to increase energy capacity to compensate for the closure of a number of coal and nuclear plants, and to reduce the UK's reliance on imported gas.

"We need to make sure the bias towards gas is dealt with... and that low carbon sources can compete on a level playing field," Mr Davey said.

"With nuclear capacity and coal capacity coming offline, we need a market structure to keep the lights on. To get investment, we need to give investors certainty that will lower the cost of capital.

"There will be no blank cheque for nuclear - unless they are price competitive, nuclear projects will not go ahead."

State subsidies for nuclear plants are illegal in the European Union, and guaranteed contracts for energy suppliers are seen by some as a way around these laws.

Mr Davey conceded that energy bills could increase as a result of these contracts, but said bills would rise even more without them due to the rising cost of imported wholesale gas. Producing our own energy, Mr Davey said, would help to keep prices down.

Npower chief executive Volker Beckers told the BBC it was too early to say how domestic fuel bills would be affected.

Environmental groups say the bill will not reduce the UK's reliance on gas.

They say that more clarity is needed over the government's long-term policy, particularly how it will achieve stringent C02 reduction targets.

Dirty plants

The long-term contracts, precise details of which are unlikely to be outlined in the bill, aim to reassure prospective investors in nuclear and offshore wind farms, which need huge up-front expenditure.

But they have proved unpopular with some energy suppliers, which say basing them on the difference between the actual market price and a preset, guaranteed price, is overly complex.

Other industry bodies have also expressed concerns about the so-called contracts for difference.

Greens' concern for energy bill

"Investment decisions for both developers and manufacturers need to be made a long time in advance and it's key that they get reassurance and understanding of how the market will allow generators of all sizes to produce and sell power," said Renewable UK's director of policy Dr Gordon Edge.

The government will also introduce an Emissions Performance Standard, designed to prevent the construction of new, dirty coal plants.

Only coal plants with carbon capture and storage will, in effect, be allowed, although this technology is unproven on a large scale.

The bill will also provide for a "capacity mechanism", effectively payments to power stations to ensure there is sufficient and reliable capacity to meet demand.

It will also create an independent, industry-financed regulator - the Office for Nuclear Regulation.

The government's nuclear policy has been undermined by the decision of German power giants E.On and RWE to pull out of building new plants in the UK. The government had planned to build eight new plants, but with French power group EDF the only major bidder left, it is very unlikely this many will be built.

Nuclear power had formed an important part of the government's plans to boost clean energy production to help hit its target of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 80% by 2050.

Environmentalists believe the problems with increasing nuclear capacity will leave the UK reliant on dirty fossil fuels.

"It's obvious that plans for new nuclear power stations have crumbled," said John Sauven, executive director of Greenpeace UK.

"The government now has to drop its misguided affair with this hugely expensive pipe dream. Energy Secretary Ed Davey should ramp up the efficiency of our energy system and invest in home-grown renewable energy to boost the economy and reduce consumers' exposure to rocketing gas prices."

Higher bills

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has said that ?110bn of investment over the next decade is needed to boost electricity generation.

It also needs to introduce measures to help improve energy efficiency to reduce demand.

One set of measures designed to encourage energy saving by companies - so-called NegaWatts - is unlikely to appear in the draft bill, according to the BBC's environment analyst Roger Harrabin. Agreeing a baseline from which to make cuts proved too difficult, he said.

Although a number of energy suppliers have cut gas and electricity prices this year, they rose sharply last year and are expected to rise again this winter.

The draft energy bill will be scrutinised by parliament before appearing as a fully-fledged bill in the autumn.
