New?discovery resurrects 'Jesus Tomb' debate

One of the designs etched on a bone box found within a 1st-century Jerusalem tomb suggests the biblical story of Jonah and the fish, which held significant symbolism for early Christians.

By Alan Boyle

Using a remote-controlled camera on the end of a robotic arm, investigators have found what could be the earliest evidence of a Christian iconography in Jerusalem, engraved on a set of "bone boxes" inside a nearly intact 1st-century tomb.

One of the limestone boxes, known more formally as an ossuary, carries a Greek inscription calling on God to "rise up" or "raise up" someone. Another box appears to show the carved image of a fish, perhaps with the prophet Jonah in its mouth. Allusions to fish and the "sign of Jonah" came to be widely used among early Christians, but not among Jerusalem's Jews.

Update: Doubts raised about the 'Jesus Discovery'

Those discoveries alone would be enough to get biblical scholars excited. But the investigators in this case are the same people who claimed five years ago that ossuaries from a nearby tomb were engraved with the names of the biblical Jesus and his family. They're putting forth this new find as supporting evidence for their earlier claims, and resurrecting the topic in a newly published book ("The Jesus Discovery") as well as a Discovery Channel documentary that's due to air this spring.

"This does reopen the whole question about the 'Jesus Tomb,'" James Tabor, a scriptural scholar at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, told me.

That almost guarantees that the link to Jesus will take center stage once again in the discussion of the discovery, with most archaeologists discounting the connection. There's even a chance that the renewed controversy would push this most recent find out of the spotlight. That would be a terrible shame, said John Dominic Crossan, an expert on 1st-century Christianity and former Catholic priest who is a professor emeritus at DePaul University.

"It's a stunning discovery," he said. "It's a stunning piece of technology. As a scholar, I really don't want to get lost in saying, 'Oh, come on, it's off the wall.' Yeah, it's off the wall. But look at the wall!"

James Tabor / UNCC

Engineer Walter Klassen and filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici hold the camera-equipped robotic arm in its folded-up configuration.

Or in this case, look at the box.

How the boxes were found
Tabor and documentary filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici located both of the 1st-century tombs ? the so-called Jesus Family Tomb as well as the one with the newly revealed inscriptions ? in a Jerusalem neighborhood known as Talpiot years ago. They looked into previous claims that the bone boxes in the Jesus Family Tomb were marked with names that meshed with the names of Jesus' brothers and sisters, as mentioned in the Gospels. The investigators went on to cite a statistical analysis of name frequency as evidence that the family interred in the caskets was that of Jesus.

Most provocatively, they pointed to one box that was said to contain the remains of Jesus, and another containing the remains of "Judah, son of Jesus." These claims ran counter to the mainstream Christian view that Jesus made a bodily resurrection after his crucifixion and death, and that he did not marry or have children. To explain the seeming discrepancy with the Gospels, Tabor and his colleagues suggested that early Christians did not necessarily believe in a bodily resurrection, but rather a spiritual resurrection in which Jesus left behind the "old clothes" of the flesh.

The first book ("The Jesus Family Tomb") and TV documentary ("The Lost Tomb of Jesus") set off a wave of protests, with skeptics saying that Tabor and Jacobovici were sensationalizing an unprovable assertion. Despite the criticism, the team continued their work, focusing on the other tomb. This tomb was only briefly examined in 1981 before protests by Orthodox Jews, concerned about the disturbance of a gravesite, forced an end to the archaeological study. The tomb was sealed back up, and a condominium was built over it. Tabor and his colleagues refer to this tomb as the "Patio Tomb," because a patio sits almost directly above the tomb.

Israel's civil and religious authorities were resistant to efforts to reopen the Patio Tomb, so Tabor, Jacobovici and their colleagues came up with an unorthodox alternative: They suggested building a robotic arm that could be extended down vent holes and drill holes into the tomb, to a maximum length of more than 15 feet. The authorities gave their permission, and the documentary team proceeded with their remote-controlled video exploration in June 2010.

James Tabor / UNCC

Investigators shot imagery of the 1st-century Jerusalem tomb and the bone boxes inside the tomb using a robotic arm, as shown in this video frame.

The filmmakers peered into niches cut into the tomb and found several inscribed bone boxes, including one that was left ajar to reveal the bones still within. In one of the niches, two boxes were jammed close together. As the robotic arm maneuvered to look at the side of one of the boxes, one of the investigators cried out, "Wait, wait, stop there!" A design had been etched into the limestone ? a design that could be interpreted as a fish with a stick figure hanging out of its mouth.

The meaning of the inscriptions
After consulting with other scriptural experts, the investigators concluded that the etching showed a representation of Jonah and the fish. The biblical tale of the prophet who was swallowed by a giant fish, only to be vomited up alive three days later, had a special resonance for early Christians, who believed in Jesus' resurrection after three days in a tomb. The image of the fish, which would not typically be carved on a Jewish ossuary, suggested to Tabor and his colleagues that this might be the earliest surviving example of a Christian marking on an artifact in Jerusalem.

The team's excitement grew when they saw the inscription on the box sitting next to the one with the fish: A four-line inscription in Greek appeared to refer to a belief in the resurrection. The inscription could be read as "Divine Jehovah, raise up, raise up," or "The Divine Jehovah raises up to the Holy Place," or "Divine Jehovah, raise up [abbreviated name]."

"This inscription has something to do with resurrection of the dead, either of the deceased in the ossuary, or perhaps, given the Jonah image nearby, an expression of faith in Jesus' resurrection," Tabor said in a news release.

The Jesus connection
Tabor and his colleagues tie this latest discovery to their earlier claims by suggesting that the two tombs were part of one complex, which might have been chiseled out by a wealthy supporter of Jesus and his disciples. They even name their prime suspect: Joseph of Arimathea, a high-ranking religious official who was said in the Gospels to have arranged Jesus' burial. In the investigators' view, the fact that they found such a strong connection to early Christianity in the Patio Tomb strengthens their original claims for the Jesus Family Tomb, which is 200 feet away.

"We now have the new archaeological evidence, literally written in stone, that can guide us in properly understanding what Jesus' earliest followers meant by their faith in Jesus' resurrection from the dead ? with his earthly remains, and those of his family, peacefully interred just yards away," Tabor and Jacobovici wrote.

Crossan said that was too much of a leap. "There's nothing that associates [the Patio Tomb] with Joseph of Arimathea," he said.

He said the two tombs may well have no relationship to each other: "This whole area is riddled with tombs, as far as we can tell."

Ben Witherington, a New Testament scholar at Asbury Theological Seminary, voiced a similar view. "The attempt to connect [the Patio Tomb] to the other tombs is sheer conjecture, unless the tombs were connected," he told me.

Witherington said the connections made in the newly published book were similar to those put forth in Tabor's earlier work. "Most of us who have evaluated his work would say, OK, all very interesting, but it's building one speculation on another speculation," he said.

However, Witherington was intrigued by the fish carving. "We have early Christian ossuaries with the fish symbol ... in the 2nd century, if not back into the 1st century," he said. "That is the early Christian symbol for I-Ch-Th-Y-S ... 'Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.' What we don't have any evidence for is that symbol on Jewish ossuaries."

The words of the inscription also caught Witherington's interest. "They imply a belief about the resurrection," he said.

It is thought that the use of such bone boxes in Jerusalem ceased in the year 70, due to the Roman destruction of the city. Thus, there's a chance that the residents buried in the Patio Tomb actually lived during the time of Jesus and his first disciples. However, Crossan noted that Christians weren't the only ones in 1st-century Jerusalem who held a religious belief in resurrection. The Pharisees and the Essenes also looked forward to the resurrection of the righteous, he said.

"What I would say is ... this is a rich Pharisee, a rich person in the 1st century who believes in the resurrection," Crossan told me. "We always thought that [the image of] Jonah coming out of the fish was peculiarly Christian. Maybe that's one more thing that the early Christians took from Jewish tradition, and this would be the first evidence."

More about biblical archaeology:

An academic paper on the Patio Tomb project is being posted to The Bible and Interpretation on Tuesday, and Tabor says the paper will be submitted for print publication as well. A press event about the project and the Discovery Channel documentary has been scheduled for 11 a.m. ET Tuesday at Discovery Times Square in New York City. Funding for the project was provided by Discovery Channel / Vision Television / Associated Producers. Tabor's colleague in obtaining the excavation license from the Israel Antiquities Authority was Rami Arav, professor of archaeology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

PC Game Reviews and News: PC Indie Game Review - Dustforce

Sweeping leaves isn't always thought of as the most enjoyable thing you can do, but it's the premise of new indie platformer Dustforce (though shouldn't that be LeafForce?!) Anyway, you have to run, jump, slide, attack and generally sweep your way through a host of levels.

Graphically Dustforce is an impressive game, its style looks deceptively simple at first but once there's a lot happening on screen, you'll realise how nicely designed the graphics are, and the animation is top notch. The music is excellent, I could load up this game purely to listen without playing (although the soundtrack is actually available to buy separately). The controls are quite simple though I did find them a bid fiddly at first (on the keyboard that is... one of these days I really am going to have to get myself another joystick!!).

After a tutorial level you get into the game map, which is like one huge level itself. Completing levels and getting good scores will give you keys to open up other levels. Some of the levels are quite small, but others look huge, and the level of challenge to complete each level varies widely ? as does the skill needed to merely complete a level compared to getting a very good score on it. For each level you get a score for technique and cleanliness (at least I think that's what it is!) as well as completion time, which gives you an overall rating ? you are instantly ranked against all other players' times. I tended to be somewhere around 18-20 thousandth (out of about 21,000!) - the best I did was about 15 thousandth. From this you can probably tell that platform games are really not my forte. I did enjoy Dustforce though, it's beautifully presented and plays very well, and there's a lot of variety and challenge there for platform fans.

You can choose from 4 different characters, though apart from aesthetic differences I wasn't sure if this made any difference to the game, and you can unlock more difficult levels when you got a ?perfect score? in any one level. Needless to say I have yet to achieve this... There's also a multi-player feature, which unfortunately I haven't been able to try out.

Basically, I suck at platform games so I didn't get as much out of Dustforce as it's possible to get. I think that if you're a fan of the platform genre then this game is going to keep you happy for a very long time. It's beautifully designed, the online high scores for each level will keep the best players compulsively returning to get a better score and trying to get into the worldwide top 10, while most platform gamers will simply enjoy the game.

ViewSonic goes dual-SIM with ViewPhone 4s, 4e and 5e, all packing Android Ice Cream Sandwich

When you're ready, here's yet another load of pre-MWC goodness. This year ViewSonic decided that merely slapping Ice Cream Sandwich on its new ViewPhones isn't good enough, so instead, the company's just-announced 4s, 4e and 5e also come with an extra SIM slot. Starting from the left we have the ViewPhone 4s featuring an impressive 3.5-inch 960 x 640 Super Clear IPS LCD (which, should be very similar to Apple's Retina Display from LG -- rather ironic given the phone's name), along with a five-megapixel camera, a VGA front-facing imager and a 1GHz chip. Pictured in the middle is a similar-looking ViewPhone 4e but packing a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 LCD, a slower processor at 650MHz only, a three-megapixel camera and one extra touch button than its sibling; all of this made with budget in mind, obviously, though somehow ViewSonic's very proud of its 10.3mm thickness.

If 3.5-inch displays aren't your cup of tea then you'll have to jump straight to the 5-inch ViewPhone 5e, but so far all we've been told is its 800 × 480 screen resolution. Could there be more in this dual-SIM beast? Stay tuned to our MWC coverage and you'll know as soon as we do.

Climate Scientist Admits To Lying, Leaking Documents

Peter Gleick is not just any scientist. He got his doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley and won a MacArthur "genius" award. He is also an outspoken proponent of scientific evidence that humans are responsible for climate change.

And earlier this week, he confessed that he had lied to obtain internal documents from the Heartland Institute, a group that questions to what extent climate change is caused by humans.

Gleick's deception has shaken the science community. Meanwhile, the Heartland Institute, whose funders and policies were described in the documents, is planning legal action.

For Peter Gleick, it's going to be a personal tragedy. For [the American Geophysical Union], it's very unfortunate. Situations like this damage our credibility. And that really hurts.

What Gleick admits to is this: He got a document from an anonymous source that appeared to come from the Heartland Institute. Gleick then called the institute claiming to be a board member. He asked for and received more documents. Then he sent them ? anonymously ? to bloggers and journalists.

The documents allegedly detailed Heartland's funding and strategies, including efforts to hire someone to write school curricula questioning mainstream scientific views on climate warming.

Gleick this week wrote in the Huffington Post that he suffered a "serious lapse of my own and professional judgment and ethics" due to his "frustration" with attacks on climate science from places like Heartland.

Scientists are shocked. "This is a tragedy on so many levels," says Michael McPhaden, who runs the American Geophysical Union. "For Peter Gleick, it's going to be a personal tragedy. For AGU, it's very unfortunate. Situations like this damage our credibility. And that really hurts."

The AGU, like most mainstream scientific groups, endorses the evidence for man-made climate change. And Gleick ran their task force on scientific ethics until he resigned last week.

"People will look at this and say, 'Ah, you know, another conspiracy in the climate community.' Of course, we all know that's smoke and mirrors. But it does hurt our ability to communicate more broadly about the reality of climate change," says McPhaden.

Roger Pielke Jr., a climate policy analyst at the University of Colorado, wouldn't go that far. "For most people it's very much inside baseball," he says. "It's a dispute among people and organizations that are really outside the public eye."

Pielke adds, however, that like some climate scientists, Gleick lost his cool over attacks on their research.

That kind of invasion of privacy is taken really seriously. It has no place in this debate. I mean what kind of ethical code allows for the invasion of privacy of individuals like that?

"My view is that some folks in the science community have gotten so hung up on the fact that some individuals and groups don't share their views, that it has become an all-out war over ideas." Pielke says what was a scientific issue has now been conscripted into the politically driven "culture war," with climate scientists and environmental groups on one side, and those who distrust and disbelieve them on the other, with little crossover.

Gleick works at the Pacific Institute in California. So far, he's not speaking publicly. A spokesman for Gleick says Gleick knows his judgment was bad but is glad to see Heartland's sources of income and political strategy out in the open. Those sources include several foundations associated with conservative political and social causes.

But Naomi Oreskes, a historian of science at the University of California, San Diego, says maybe that's not such a big deal. "The documents that were released last week essentially affirm what we already knew," she says. "And [the deception] was not necessary because this information is actually available through entirely appropriate means." In fact, Oreskes has documented ties between climate skeptics and their funders in her book, Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming.

Oreskes says Gleick's actions don't diminish the validity of decades of climate research, nor do they reflect the ethics of scientists who do it. "Thousands and thousands of people are working on this issue, and this is one man," she says.

At the Heartland Institute, President Joseph Bast says some of the internal documents reveal sensitive information about Heartland donors and staff members. "That kind of invasion of privacy is taken really seriously," Bast says. "It has no place in this debate. I mean, what kind of ethical code allows for the invasion of privacy of individuals like that?"

Bast says one of the documents that Gleick circulated, a two-page "strategy" that casts Heartland in the worst light, is a forgery. He says an internal investigation shows that "that document did not originate in this organization. There's no trace of that document anywhere in a Heartland office computer."

Bast points out that some of the institute's donors specifically ask for anonymity, which has now been breached, not only by Gleick but by websites that have displayed the documents.

And he disagrees with those who say Gleick's behavior is atypical, claiming he's typical of people in the climate community who refuse to engage in debate with Heartland.

"Gleick is not an exception. He's a role model for people on their side," Bast says.

Bast says the institute plans to pursue criminal and civil action against Gleick and possibly others involved in circulating the documents.

Superbugs from space offer new source of power

ScienceDaily (Feb. 21, 2012) ? Bacteria normally found 30km above Earth have been identified as highly efficient generators of electricity.

Bacillus stratosphericus -- a microbe commonly found in high concentrations in the stratosphere orbiting Earth with the satellites -- is a key component of a new 'super' biofilm that has been engineered by a team of scientists from Newcastle University.

Isolating 75 different species of bacteria from the Wear Estuary, Country Durham, UK, the team tested the power-generation of each one using a Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC).

By selecting the best species of bacteria, a kind of microbial "pick and mix," they were able to create an artificial biofilm, doubling the electrical output of the MFC from 105 Watts per cubic metre to 200 Watts per cubic metre.

While still relatively low, this would be enough power to run an electric light and could provide a much needed power source in parts of the world without electricity.

Among the 'super' bugs was B. Stratosphericus, a microbe normally found in the atmosphere but brought down to earth as a result of atmospheric cycling processes and isolated by the team from the bed of the River Wear.

Publishing their findings February 21 in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Environmental Science and Technology,

Grant Burgess, Professor of Marine Biotechnology at Newcastle University, said the research demonstrated the "potential power of the technique."

"What we have done is deliberately manipulate the microbial mix to engineer a biofilm that is more efficient at generating electricity," he explains.

"This is the first time individual microbes have been studied and selected in this way. Finding B.Stratosphericus was quite a surprise but what it demonstrates is the potential of this technique for the future -- there are billions of microbes out there with the potential to generate power."

The use of microbes to generate electricity is not a new concept and has been used in the treatment of waste water and sewage plants.

Microbial Fuel Cells, which work in a similar way to a battery, use bacteria to convert organic compounds directly into electricity by a process known as bio-catalytic oxidation.

A biofilm -- or 'slime' -- coats the carbon electrodes of the MFC and as the bacteria feed, they produce electrons which pass into the electrodes and generate electricity.

Until now, the biofilm has been allowed to grow un-checked but this new study shows for the first time that by manipulating the biofilm you can significantly increase the electrical output of the fuel cell.

Funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the study identified a number of electricity-generating bacteria.

As well as B. Stratosphericus, other electricity-generating bugs in the mix were Bacillus altitudinis - another bug from the upper atmosphere -- and a new member of the phylum Bacteroidetes.

Q and A: The 50th Anniversary of ?The Pill? | Science Gobble

By Rihard Raza | February 18, 2012

The pill. Oral contraception for women has been about for 5 decades.

Credit: Wikimedia Commons

VANCOUVER, CANADA?In the past half century, few items have transformed society as profoundly as oral contraceptives. Initial introduced as the FDA-approved drug Enovid in 1961, ?the pill? operates by delivering a constant provide of estrogen and progesterone, which block the hormones that lead to ovulation. About 85 percent of girls in the U.S. will take contraceptive drugs for an typical of 5 years. Offered its widespread use by a normally healthy and young population, what is identified about the risks and rewards of oral contraception? What are the alternatives? And when will we see ?the pill? for men?

Yesterday, Ronald Burkman, a obstetrician/gynecologist at Tufts University School of Medicine, gave a speak on these topics at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (which publishes ScienceNOW). I sat down with him to chat about 50 years of the contraceptive ?wonder drug?.

What interested you in studying contraception?

Its substantial public wellness impact. When you recognize there are about 34 million unintended, unplanned pregnancies that take place each year, primarily in developing countries, you realize, for nations in sub-Saharan Africa, not getting contraception has a important impact on maternal mortality. If you are in sub-Saharan Africa in some countries, your lifetime danger of dying in pregnancy is 1 in 30. Your lifetime threat of dying of pregnancy in this country is less than 10 per 100,000.

In your speak you asserted the pill?s risks of blood clotting, lung artery blockage, heart attack and stroke are minimal. What about cancer risks?

1 or two cancers could be increased by the pill ? benign and malignant liver tumors ? but those happen at a single per million or one per two million, so it is not a large public health problem. We?ve undoubtedly been searching at women on the pill and the danger of cervical cancer, and there?s some evidence that it may possibly happen, but once again, it doesn?t go quickly to critical cervical cancer. But breast cancer? Not a lot of issue there. In reality, a study that I was involved with looked at females of reproductive age group and identified no increased risk of breast cancer, and we showed that there?s protective effects against endometrial and ovarian cancer.

Other speakers in your session described the pill?s rewards beyond contraception, from menstrual cycle regularity to decreased threat of ovarian and endometrial cancers and increased bone mass. Given these positive aspects, would you tell women to use oral contraception just for their health?

Yeah, you could use it for medical factors. Certainly therapy of endometriosis [a disorder where uterus cells grow outside the uterus], irregular menstrual cycles, young women with dysmenorrhea [painful periods]?it is 1 of the top remedies for it. So there?s a variety of causes where oral contraceptive can be utilised in a non-contraceptive way. But placing wholesome females on anything to say that it has a health benefit? that becomes a prospective problem. And the reality is, a lot of people use it anyway for contraception.

Are these positive aspects linked lengthy-term use only or short-term use also?

1 year of use does offer benefit far more prolonged use supplies additional benefit.

Does the pill have side effects on mood?

It can. It varies from individual to individual. [Some pill formulations] will probably have an improvement [on mood]. Secondly, a lot of men and women worry about weight gain. Well, the data are fairly constant: the pill does not lead to any weight gain.

What are the challenges to developing ?the pill? for men?

Some of the challenges are, is this stuff reversible? Clearly if you tie the tubes ? vasectomy ? it is very, extremely successful. But that?s not what most folks want. Some of the [candidate male contraceptive] drugs, such as high-dose testosterone therapy, have side effects ? potentially even cardiovascular side effects. And [the infertility effect] is not reversible ? fully. So [some of these efforts] fell by the wayside.

Do you feel the principal barriers to developing oral contraceptives for males have been societal or biological?

I can assure you that if [pharmaceutical firms] could develop one, it?d be a blockbuster, so they have a lot of interest in digging through. It?s just the science has not lent itself but so far with any breakthrough that?s reversible, straightforward to use, and so on. If somebody stated here?s a pill you take for a month at a time, I consider men would sign up readily. In reality, nothing?s there. Element of the issue is you currently have a really effective form of contraception. The [contraception] market?s saturated now.

Exactly where do you see the field going?

I consider contraception will be a considerable concern in terms of dealing with excess population growth. It?s how you deal with the unintended pregnancy rate worldwide that?s key. I also take a lengthy term view with global warming. Why do we have some of these effects on earth?s atmosphere? It?s since of the population. In Brazil, they cut down the forest for wood to construct houses. China [implemented] the one kid [rule]. But they also have the other effect ? far more folks went into the middle class, and what do they do? They copied [the polluting U.S. life style]. It really is a massive problem.

Get Rid Of The Clutter In Your Garage ? Buy The Right Garage ...

Can?t take it anymore? Has the sight of your garage become too unsightly that you are committed today more than ever to put some organization into it? Achieving this is no different from doing other home improvement projects. You need to plan things carefully, especially when choosing the right garage cabinets. But how do you deal with this?

Of course, any successful purchase should begin with developing a budget. By knowing how much you can comfortably spend for your cabinets, you can get started. You have a number of factors to account for but your goal is to set an amount reasonable enough for you to get a quality storage cabinet that would last as long as your home does.

When this is done, your next step is to measure the space that can be dedicated to the storage. Here you have to ensure that you leave enough parking space. After taking the dimensions and before deciding on whether to get the slatwall or the overhead storage or any of the options that the online company, www.redlinegaragegear.com offers, make sure you have taken an inventory of your storage needs.

By taking an account of what you intend to keep inside, you can make the right choice of cabinet design and configuration. Also, determine ahead whether you want a workbench with the storage and how many locked cabinets you intend to keep. At this point you should also decide on whether to have modular or a built in storage. The benefit of having a modular cabinet is that you can bring it with you in case you have to move.

When you already have a clear idea of the type of garage storage that meets your qualifications, you can now check for a manufacturer. Make a search online as this can give you a wider selection. Don?t let pass the opportunity to check www.redlinegaragegear.com, which can provide you with excellent garage solutions along with a lifetime warranty on the products. In this case, you no longer have to bother about quality and durability because such is already given.

You should just focus on sorting out your options and picking the one that perfectly meets your standards. While you look at your choices, pay close attention to the designs as well. Make sure that the color and the style you choose complement your home. See to it that both functionality and aesthetic quality are achieved so that you can say that you get the best value for your money.

The Need For Yoga Exercise Intended For ... - New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

First things first, yoga is not a workout or really even a form of fitness. Rather this is an essential health practice that will improve every aspect of your well being. There are many types of fitness out there, but they don?t provide you with the health benefits that yoga will, especially in the long term.

That?s because yoga strengthens and also stretches muscles that you would normally never work. While that doesn?t sound really beneficial because they are less important muscles, it actually really is.

However, through yoga there are so many back bends and stretches, what this actually does is gradually increase the flexibility of the back. With that you increase the strength of your back muscles, and in turn your overall back fitness.

That makes it a lot harder for you to stretch the back muscles, and it also makes it much more difficult to pull off a strain. That?s because you?ll be able to use muscles you never even knew that you had.

The beauty of something like yoga is that it?s not a normal type of workout. This is instead going to be all about you and how you feel. You?ll find that it improves everything as well, which makes it more of a healthy practice.

With yoga, you?re going to be improving everything as basic as your balance, but also going much further to everything like your overall health and breathing. That?s because it forces you to use your entire body in unison.

Moreover, being more agile is going to allow you to strike the ball more sweetly no matter how your body is turned. Yoga will attune your muscles as such that you can bend around into crazy positions so that you always get a sweet strike.

But remember to pace yourself. Yoga takes a long time to master, and for you to see the full effects of the practice. You?ve got to put the time in if you really want to see how far you can come with these programs.

(AP) ? Four days after his big win at Pebble Beach, Phil Mickelson keeps right on rolling.

Mickelson hit driver off the deck from just under 300 yards on the par-5 11th that led to a two-putt birdie, and he ended a gorgeous afternoon Thursday at Riviera by chipping in from 35 feet for birdie. That gave him a 5-under 66 and a one-shot lead in the Northern Trust Open.

Dating to the back nine of his second round at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Mickelson has made birdie or eagle on one-third of the holes he has played. And his streak of consecutive holes without a bogey finally ended at 49 on the par-3 16th.

No matter. He looked good with the putter and with his low, penetrating tee shots that he kept below the tree line on a windy day that prevented low scoring.

J.B. Holmes, in his fourth tournament since returning from brain surgery in September, played his final six holes without a par. His round ended with a 315-yard tee shot ? a big drive in the cool air of Los Angeles in February ? and an approach to 8 feet for birdie at No. 9, the second-toughest hole at Riviera.

That gave him a 4-under 67. He was tied with Hunter Mahan, whose 35-foot birdie at No. 5 sent him on a string of four straight birdies.

They all played in the afternoon, when the wind began to die late in the day.

Jonathan Byrd, who faced the chilly, blustery conditions of the morning, had a 68. He was joined by Carl Pettersson.

The first round was suspended by darkness with 30 players yet to finish the round, a typical occurrence at this tournament with 144-man field and limited daylight.

Mickelson is coming off an 8-under 64 in the final round at Pebble Beach, where he rallied from a six-shot deficit ? and beat playing partner Tiger Woods by 11 shots ? to change the outlook on his West Coast Swing. Riviera is his final tournament before the tour moves to Florida, and even on a different golf course, not much has changed.

He holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the long par-3 fourth hole, and then really got going on the back nine.

After a tough pitch to 12 feet that led to birdie on the 10th, Mickelson had 297 yards to the hole on the 11th and decided to hit driver, a shot he had not tried in months.

It came off perfectly and climbed onto the front edge of the green, making Mickelson the only player to have an eagle putt on the 587-yard hole, which played right into the wind. The pin was all the way back, away from a large hump in the putting surface, which gave Mickelson the green light.

His eagle putt from 60 feet died next to the hole.

"I didn't think it was going to necessarily be reachable into that wind, but I was able to hit a low drive off the tee that scooted along the ground, and I felt like if I could hit one more of those with a driver I could get right up by the green," Mickelson said. "I felt like it was worth the risk to try to scoop one up."

The chip-in from behind the 18th was a bonus.

Mickelson made his lone bogey when his chip behind the 16th green ran 7 feet past the cup, and he missed the putt. On the 17th, his wedge rolled back to 7 feet for birdie, but the putt slid by on the left.

He faced another quick chip on the 18th, but it dropped in with perfect speed.

"It wasn't one I was really trying to make," he said. "It was quick, it was downhill, and I had to play about four or five feet of break, so it's not one that you're trying to get aggressive with. I was trying to get good speed and try to let it feed with the break, and I got fortunate, obviously, that it went in."

Holmes was the first player to reach 5 under, and that's where his fun began ? consecutive bogeys when he failed to get up-and-down from just short of the green; a tap-in birdie at the par-3 sixth, with the pin below the bunker in the middle of the green; an 18-foot birdie on the seventh, a three-putt double bogey on the eighth and the birdie at the end.

He has struggled with a slight loss of power since brain surgery in September, and he even topped a shot in Phoenix a few weeks ago. But it's all starting to come together.

"I feel like each week my swing has definitely gotten a little bit better and improved a little bit," Holmes said. "My swing speed has slowly come back a little bit being out here and playing this much."

Byrd woke up Thursday morning to hear the wind whipping at his rental house on the Pacific bluffs. The last thing he wanted to do was play golf at Riviera, but it worked out well for him. He made five birdies in the toughest of conditions. The average score from the morning wave was 73.7.

"We're staying up on a bluff about five miles away," he said. "I got out of bed this morning and walked outside, and I was pretty anxious about playing this golf course today because it was howling on top of that bluff. And it whipped all day. My approach was just to keep it in play and have a pretty conservative game plan."

The afternoon players got a slight break, though the wind remained a factor.

"The last seven holes the wind started to die down progressively, and by the end, it couldn't be playing any nicer or any better," Mahan said. "So I was excited to come make some birdies late."

DIVOTS: UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay, who didn't miss a cut on the PGA Tour last year, opened with a 78. The Northern Trust Open also gave an exemption to Texas freshman Jordan Spieth, who had a 76. ... Tim Clark, playing for the first time since The Players Championship because of elbow surgery, was 4 over through 16 holes.

Wolverine is one of the most famous characters of the X-Men Marvel Comics, but it is no doubt when your character has acute sen .. Alternative transportation vehicles for either electric or smaller cars take more strength every day but sometimes forget the basics and simple it is a bike a bike or even a Segway, but require more care because our bodies are exposed to any fall. In most large cities the problem of heavy traffic is constant, but particularly in Mexico City is nothing short of hell because of multiple road works, but also the geographical location does not help much to have constant slopes, not having rails confined enough, bad weather and clear insecurity. Well, much of the above can be solved and speak particularly of the two wheels: bicycles and motorcycles the pros and cons and care. In the flat areas of the cities are those with greater advantages, and that can circulate glued to the sidewalk and if there is somewhere we can load covered the advance and then keep pedaling, obviously depend on the physical condition of each user so we do not get to the office almost need oxygen or bathed in sweat, cold and rain are also a factor against. The care we must begin in our clothes because we must bring helmet and a reflective vest or brightly colored motifs, the bike must be in good mechanical condition and well lubricated chain as axles, brakes and must be equipped with rear and front light (on the market small LED's ideal for this purpose) and tires with good life. The bike must always round to the right, glued to the sidewalk, and if we are forced into the same should go slow with respect to pedestrians at all times we must assume that we are invisible and expect cars to stop for us step (yes, it sounds really bad but better warn) in each corner and watch it stop at traffic lights do not start seeing the green light and never missing that accelerates the other side to see the yellow light. In addition to the above precautions must also take into account the oil stains, dirt, stones and metal plates. The bike is definitely the best way to get around the city, and if our work is relatively close and in flat areas we should try even twice a week at the end will become a habit for good sports impact on our health. We have spoken before of the care that we have with the bikes, and indeed many of the things of bicycles apply to motorcycles. The main changes are obviously the weight and speed, but we must also wear helmets and reflective clothing, move on a rail line but we must go to a tire of the car in front if there is an emergency brake to maneuver quickly. The rails move between uses, provided that the overall traffic is less cars, sometimes the cars are going to 20km/hr, and move the bike a little more of that will allow us to move forward, so there is no hurry . This does not mean that we walk between rails dancing, as the motorist can n see us when we move from one lane to another and then blame the driver of the motorcycle. The urban bikes and scooters are the choice for longer distances. In both cases we must always be alert, more than usual and trying to guess who will make car drivers, seeing if they have erratic behavior such as a spin without directional and quickly. If there is anything else we risk two-wheeled vehicles to maximize precautions but can be as fun, healthy in the case of bicycles and of course a factor that directly reduces daily stress.
