Archos Arnova GBook heads to the FCC, may have literary ambitions

Archos Arnova GBook heads to the FCC, may have literary ambitions

Archos makes regular stops at the FCC. We know this. When it passes an Arnova-badged device called the GBook through the US agency, though, that piques our interest. The name immediately suggests a reading-friendly Android tablet in the vein of the Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet, but there's not much in the way of imagery and details to make a definitive judgment call. The hand-friendly small design and the 802.11n WiFi inside only fuel those suspicions, however. We don't see clues in the testing as to when the Arnova GBook might reach stores; that said, the looming back-to-school and holiday seasons may have some sway in getting the device to bookworms sooner rather than later.

Sangakkara, Mathews boost Sri Lanka vs India

Kumar Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews hit half-centuries as Sri Lanka recovered from a poor start to post a challenging 286-5 against India in the third one-day international in Colombo on Saturday.

Sangakkara cracked a solid 73 while Mathews smashed a brisk 57-ball 71 not out to boost their team's hopes of gaining the lead in the five-match series, currently tied 1-1.

Sri Lanka were struggling at 20-3 after electing to bat in the day-night match, but Sangakkara and skipper Mahela Jayawardene (65) steadied the innings with a 121-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Mathews and Jeevan Mendis (45 not out) then plundered 104 runs in the last 12 overs to help their side set a stiff target. Mathews cracked one six and five fours, while Mendis hit one six and three fours in his 40-ball knock.

Fast bowler Zaheer Khan did the early damage when he removed openers Upul Tharanga (eight) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (four) in his opening three overs before seamer Irfan Pathan dismissed Dinesh Chandimal for no score.

But Jayawardene and Sangakkara defied the Indian attack for more than 23 overs before leg-spinner Rahul Sharma broke the stand when he trapped the Sri Lankan captain leg-before.

Jayawardene hit five fours in his 79-ball knock.

Sangakkara, who scored a century in the opening match of the series, also put on 41 for the fifth wicket with Mathews before being caught by Virat Kohli at point off paceman Ashok Dinda in the 38th over.

He hit five fours in his 95-ball knock.

Sri Lanka made one change from the side which played the last match, bringing in all-rounder Mendis in place of Lahiru Thirimanne.

India replaced paceman Umesh Yadav and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha with Dinda and Sharma.Scoreboard

Syria army launches feared Aleppo fightback

The Syrian army launched a fightback against rebels in Aleppo on Saturday, amid concern among Western governments about reprisals against the civilian population of the country's second city.

Troops backed by tanks and helicopter gunships, which had been massing for the past two days, moved on southwestern districts of the commercial hub, where rebel fighters concentrated their forces when they seized much of the northern city on July 20.

Artillery pounded Salaheddin and other rebel neighbourhoods from 8 am (0500 GMT) as ground troops made their advance, an AFP correspondent reported.

Trapped civilians crowded into basements, seeking refuge from the intense bombardment.

"You can say that the fightback has begun," the head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, told AFP.

"The fiercest clashes of the uprising are taking place in several neighbourhoods of the city," he said.

Pro-government media had warned that the "mother of all battles" loomed in Aleppo as the government moved to reassert its authority after recapturing rebels' districts of the capital earlier in the week.

"Aleppo will be the last battle waged by the Syrian army to crush the terrorists and, after that, Syria will emerge from the crisis," the Al-Watan newspaper said.

Both sides acknowledged that casualties were likely to be high as the more than 16-month uprising comes to a head.

"Rebels are stationed in narrow streets, in which fighting will be difficult," a regime security official told AFP.

The opposition fighters had been holding their fire in readiness for the threatened counter-offensive, the AFP correspondent said.

But their small arms and rocket-propelled grenades were little match for the heavy armour of the Syrian army.

Three rebel fighters were killed in Aleppo on Saturday before the launch of the army's fightback, the Observatory said.

Five rebels and four civilians were killed in and around Damascus, and one civilian died in Daraa, south of the capital, cradle of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's rule which broke out in March last year.

On Friday, the rebels captured 150 soldiers and pro-government militiamen in Aleppo and in the northwestern province of Idlib on the Turkish border, the Observatory said.

Turkey, which has given refuge to defecting army officers who have formed the kernel of the rebel Free Syrian Army as well as tens of thousands of fleeing civilians, warned it could "not remain an observer" as the violence raged across its southern border.

"There is a regime there that kills and massacres its own people," said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"We must do what we can together in the United Nations Security Council, and also in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League, to make sure that we can make some important progress in trying to avert this appalling situation."

UN chief Ban Ki-moon called on Damascus not to press ahead with the threatened assault on the country's second city.

"I'm seriously concerned by the escalating violence in Aleppo," Ban said. "I urge the Syrian government to halt the offensive. The violence from both sides must stop for the sake of suffering civilians."

British Prime Minister David Cameron said there were "very real concerns that we have that the Syrian regime is about to carry out some truly appalling acts around and in the city of Aleppo."

Italy called for "maximum pressure" on Assad's government to prevent further killings.

French foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero told AFP that "with the build-up of heavy weapons around Aleppo, Assad is preparing to carry out a fresh slaughter of his own people."

In late May, at least 108 people were killed near the central town of Houla, the United Nations said. On July 12, regime forces killed more than 150 people in the central village of Treimsa, the Observatory said.

The former head of the troubled UN observer mission in Syria, Robert Mood, warned that even Assad's departure from office might not bring an end to civil war amid the sectarian tensions sparked by his Alawite minority's long domination of the Sunni Muslim majority.

"Many think that if Bashar al-Assad falls or that if he is given an honourable exit... the problem will be solved. That is an over-simplification one should be wary of," the veteran peacekeeper said.

"The situation could even get worse."

US ambassador Robert Ford sought to allay the fears of Alawites and other minority groups who have manned the militias that have been one of the mainstays of the regime.

"There are some who are uncertain of the future and fear retaliation because of the community to which they belong," said Ford, who returned to Washington in February after the mounting violence prompted the closure of the US embassy.

"Neither a community nor an ethnicity must be blamed for the actions of individuals in the regime," he said in a posting on his Facebook page.

(AP) ? Scott Piercy is discovering that not everything you dislike is bad for you.

After two rounds in the Canadian Open, Piercy had a share of the lead with William McGirt ? and had seen just about enough of Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

"This golf course takes the juices out of it for me," Piercy said Friday after following his opening 8-under 62 with a 67.

McGirt had a 66 on the classic Harry S. Colt-designed course, and the leaders matched the tournament 36-hole scoring record at 11-under 129.

Robert Garrigus was two strokes back after a 66, and Bo Van Pelt was 9 under after a 66. Tim Clark, Vijay Singh and Josh Teater were 8 under. Clark had a 62, Singh shot 67, and Teater 65.

Bud Cauley had a 63 to join Troy Matteson and Camilo Villegas at 7 under. Villegas had a 64, and Matteson shot 68.

British Open champion Ernie Els missed the cut with rounds of 72 and 70.

"It's unfortunate I didn't have my game with me," Els said. "There's always next time."

The tight, tree-lined layout demands precision and often forces players to play it safe.

"This golf is boring golf for me," said Piercy, the Reno-Tahoe Open winner last year for his lone PGA Tour title. "I'm not going for it. I'm not trying to put my foot on the accelerator. I'm kind of touch and go."

McGirt was in much better spirits after a round that included a 50-foot birdie putt from the fringe on No. 8. He's winless on the PGA Tour, and cautious about getting too far ahead of himself.

"There are still 36 holes left," McGirt said. "There is a lot of golf left."

Van Pelt sent up a roar when he holed out from 143 yards for eagle on No. 9 ? his last hole of the day. Clark reeled off six birdies and added a holed-out eagle of his own to match the course record with the 62.

"It was obviously a great day for me," Clark said. "I'm excited. It is nice to be back up in Canada. I have some good memories up here. The course suits me well, too, and I've enjoyed playing."

Rain left the greens soft and receptive, and gave players the opportunity to lift, clean and place their golf balls in the fairway for both rounds. With more rain expected early Saturday, a compressed third round will be played with threesomes going off both tees.

Five of the 23 Canadian players survived the cut, led by David Hearn. He was seven strokes back after his second straight 68.

"I was steady again today. I just didn't make quite as many birdies as I would have liked," Hearn said. "I'm certainly not out of reach for this tournament ? guys are shooting 62s and 63s. If I was to get hot tomorrow and put one of those in, you never know what'll happen."

Slumping Canadian Mike Weir missed the cut for the third straight year, shooting consecutive 72s.

Pat Fletcher, born in England, was the last Canadian winner, taking the 1954 event at Point Grey in Vancouver. Carl Keffer is the only Canadian-born champion, winning in 1909 and 1914. Albert Murray, a Canadian also born in England, won in 1908 and 1913.

Jim Furyk, the winner in 2006 at Hamilton and 2007 at Angus Glen, also missed the cut. He shot 70-70 to fall a stroke short of advancing to weekend play.

Penn State: Insurance firm pulls ads. Will others follow?

Penn State football loses State Farm's insurance ads for home games as General Motors reconsiders sponsorship deal with Penn State. Insurance firm says move was 'the best decision.'

Penn State football players warm up during their first spring practice in State College, Pa., in March. The latest fallout from the sex scandal at Penn State: Insurance firm State Farm has decided to pull its ads from the football program's home games.

State?Farm?is pulling its ads from Penn?State?football broadcasts, while General Motors is reconsidering its sponsorship deal and Wall Street is threatening to downgrade the school's credit rating, suggesting the price of the sexual abuse scandal could go well beyond the $60 million fine and other penalties imposed by the NCAA.

Bloomington, Ill.-based?State?Farm?said it had been reviewing its connection to Penn?State?since the arrest of retired assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky last November. The insurance company said it will pull ads from broadcasts of Nittany Lions home games but continue to advertise during Penn?State's?away contests.

"We will not directly support Penn?State?football this year,"?State?Farm?spokesman Dave Phillips said Tuesday. "We just feel it was the best decision."

State?Farm?had no immediate information on how much money is at stake.

The NCAA imposed unprecedented sanctions against Penn?State?on Monday, including the fine, a four-year bowl ban and a sharp reduction in the number of football scholarships it may offer.

The governing body also erased 14 years of victories, wiping out 111 of coach Joe Paterno's wins and stripping him of his standing as the most successful coach in the history of big-time college football.

NCAA President Mark Emmert said he relied on a report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, who found that Paterno and three top officials concealed child sexual abuse allegations against Sandusky more than a decade ago to protect the school and its powerful football program.

With Penn?State's?once-sterling reputation in tatters, the university could face an exodus of sponsors unwilling to have their brands linked to scandal, said Kevin Adler, founder of Chicago-based Engage Marketing Inc.

Adler said he would advise current sponsors to pull out of their deals with Penn?State, adding that most contracts have morality clauses giving advertisers an out.

"I think the public perception is pretty clear and definitive at this point. That brand is damaged beyond the point of short-term repair. It is the sponsorship partner's obligation first and foremost to look after the health of their own brand," Adler said. "None of the sponsors owe Penn?State?anything."

So far, though, Penn?State?appears to be hanging on.

GM spokesman Pat Morrissey said the automaker is reviewing its sponsorship but has not made a decision. Morrissey did not immediately return a call about the value of the sponsorship deal.

Other sponsors said they plan to stick with Penn?State, including Purchase, N.Y.-based PepsiCo Inc., Pittsburgh-based PNC bank and Pennsylvania's largest health insurer, Highmark Inc.

"Highmark's partnership with Penn?State?is about health and wellness. We do have a sponsorship with the athletics program. While we routinely evaluate all of our sponsorships, we plan to continue at this time," spokesman Aaron Billger said.

PNC Financial Services Group issued a statement after the July 12 release of the Freeh report that its "ongoing engagement with the university signals our support of the students and traditions of Penn?State. ... We believe that the university will learn from this experience and become stronger."

Bank spokesman Fred Solomon said the NCAA sanctions have not changed PNC's position.

Pepsi spokeswoman Gina Anderson said Tuesday the company also stood by its recent statement in response to the Freeh report.

"We are deeply disturbed by the findings of the investigation and the conduct of certain individuals at PennState?University, but will continue to honor our longstanding contract as a campus beverage provider," the statement said.

Moody's Investors Service said Tuesday that it may cut the school's Aa1 rating. The Freeh report, along with the NCAA sanctions, could hurt enrollment and fundraising, and the school is still under?state?and federal investigation, the rating agency said.

A downgrade could make it more expensive for Penn?State?to borrow money for expansion or other projects.

Around Happy Valley, as the university and the surrounding area are known, Penn Staters and business owners worry that the NCAA sanctions will drive down attendance at home games and hurt the hotels, restaurants and university-themed clothing shops that rely on the Nittany Lions' loyal football fans.

"Football is absolutely intertwined with the university, therefore the town," said graduate student Will Ethier. "Such hard hits really will hit the town economically." He added: "If one gets sanctioned, everybody else gets sanctioned."

Average attendance at the 106,500-seat Beaver Stadium has long been robust. It ranked no lower than fourth nationally in average attendance each year since 1991, a university spokesman said. And Penn?State's?alumni association, with more than 165,000 members, is billed as the largest in the world. Already, the team has sold 85,000 season tickets for 2012.

Still, Matt Powell, an analyst with SportsOneSource, a Charlotte, N.C.-based provider of sports business information, said sales of Penn?State?clothing are dropping, from about $80 million in 2010 to $60 million after the scandal broke last year to possibly $45 million this year.

Chris Stathes, who has a daughter at Penn?State?and manages a Waffle Shop in?State?College, said he would not be surprised to see 20,000 or 30,000 empty seats at Beaver Stadium. He said some fans might not want to make the drive to see home games in?State?College, several hours from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

"What are you going to watch for?" Stathes said. "They can't advance to any postseason bowl game or anything like that. People are still going to be disgusted over the whole thing."

Several Penn?State?fans, whether they buy tickets or watch on TV, insisted they would not lose interest in the team.

"We will go to every game," said Sam Zamrik, 80, a retired professor of engineering and a season ticket holder for 40 years. "They need our support."

First-year head coach Bill O'Brien said of the team's fans Tuesday: "I would tell them to renew their season tickets. I would tell them to move forward, turn the page. I would tell them we've got a football team that's working extremely hard for this upcoming season."

AP Sports Writer Genaro C. Armas in?State?College contributed to this story.

Controversial feature paints Steve Jobs as a ?Genius? and a jerk?

News

Wired magazine has featured Apple co-founder Steve Jobs on the cover in a controversial feature that explores the late CEO?s management style and its effect on tech leaders today, with the headline asking ?Do you really want to be like Steve Jobs?

The cover image depicts Jobs??dual and contradictory nature, with a halo and horns and taglines describing him as a ?Buddhist? and a tyrant? and a ?Genius? and a jerk?.

Reports claim that the feature entitled ?The Story of Steve Jobs: An Inspiration or a Cautionary Tale?? ?borrows heavily? from Walter Isaacson?s official biography of Steve Jobs released last year. Isaacson recently gave a lecture about his book in which he made it clear that anyone looking to copy the leader?s management style would be misguided if they thought it would make them as successful as Jobs.

?People have written about this book being a guide for managers. People tell me, ?I?m like Steve! I push people to perfection. But you don?t need to push people to be like Steve, you need know how to be a genius at creating things, not just driving people crazy,? Isaacson said.

In an article?published in the Harvard Business Review April Issue Isaacson summarises a set of leadership lessons he attributes to Jobs.? He wrote: ?In the months since my biography of Jobs came out, countless commentators have tried to draw management lessons from it. Some of those readers have been insightful, but I think that many of them (especially those with no experience in entrepreneurship) fixate too much on the rough edges of his personality.?

Below is an excerpt from the feature in Wired ? you can also read the full article here.

Join or get out of the way?it?s a phrase that sums up what Jobs? life has taught his admirers today. Andrew Hargadon, a professor at UC Davis and author of?How Breakthroughs Happen: The Surprising Truth About How Companies Innovate,?points out that Jobs? brashness has helped inspire a larger reaction to several decades of conventional wisdom about the importance of worker empowerment and consensus decision- making. ?Jobs is showing us the value in the old-school, autocratic way. We?ve gone so far toward the other extreme, toward a bovine sociology in which happy cows are supposed to produce more milk.? That is, it took a hippie-geek like Jobs to give other bosses permission to be aggressive and domineering again.

This isn?t aggression for its own sake but for the good of a company. Tristan O?Tierney, a Mac and iPhone software developer, helped Twitter creator Jack Dorsey found the credit-card-swiping startup Square three years ago. O?Tierney says that he now sees the value in bluntly telling people their work is crap. ?You don?t make better products by saying everything is great,? he explains. ?You make them better by forcing people to do work they didn?t know they had in them.? Aaron Levie, a self-described Jobs ?wantrepreneur,? started Box, which allows cloud-based file-sharing, in his USC dorm room in 2005. To new hires, he quotes Jobs??Some people aren?t used to an environment where excellence is expected??to make clear to them that Box is just such an environment. ?My lesson from Jobs,? Levie says, ?is that I can push my employees further than they thought possible, and I won?t rush any product out the door without it being perfect.? He adds: ?That approach comes with collateral damage on the people side.?

Victims' tweets give insight on life, death

For Jessica Ghawi and Alex Sullivan, life's final minutes were about anticipation ? not for anything life-altering, just a few hours of entertainment.

But their thoughts, as shared through tweets from two of the 12 killed in Friday's early-morning mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., have become a focal point for thousands of Americans openly contemplating a fundamental curiosity: For people about to die, what are the last moments in this world like?

Such minutes have typically been intimate, once reserved for one's own confidantes or, at least, a select few who might be nearby. But as Twitter and other social networks become real-time databases of human thought and interaction, the unfiltered conclusions of some human lifetimes are being cast into the public sphere for the entire world to see.

Among the billions of posts made each day on social nets, users regularly gravitate toward final postings by celebrities and others who have died. The Aurora victims have become the most recent example.

Sullivan was celebrating his 27th birthday at the start of a weekend when he planned to also mark his first anniversary with his wife, Cassie. He tweeted shortly before the movie: "(hash)TheDarkKnightRises (at)Reel_Nerds oh man one hour till the movie and its going to be the best BIRTHDAY ever."

Once his death became public, the tweet morphed into a springboard for a steady stream of people noting its significance and sharing sentiments. As new tweets rolled in, they came from different people but many comments were universal; things like: "RIP," ''So sad. Last tweet," or teary emoticons.

For Ghawi, a 24-year-old aspiring sportscaster who worked under the name Jessica Redfield, the public words in those last minutes are her bantering with a magazine hockey writer about being among the first to see the highly anticipated Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises."

"You aren't seeing it tonight?!" Ghawi asks Sporting News hockey writer Jesse Spector on Twitter.

"Nope," he replies.

Ghawi then jokes that Spector is a loser, and he retorts that that's why she's tweeting and not at the movie. Ghawi replies with her final tweet, in all caps: "MOVIE DOESN'T START FOR 20 MINUTES." It was, though she of course didn't realize it, her last public statement.

But as it was retweeted and favorited thousands of times and cited by reporters worldwide to help piece together portraits of her personality, it also, in a way that wasn't possible a few years ago, connected her to countless people seeking to know her as more than a victim of one of the worst mass shootings in American history.

The unknowing candor shown by Ghawi and Sullivan make the glimpses they gave us even more honest. It underscores that few of us know when death will arrive. And in a world where social media has become so deeply ingrained in our shared culture so quickly, we also have little control over which random slice of life might serve as our final exclamation.

Anyone who's used social networks knows they've revolutionized the way we communicate. But few sign up for accounts thinking they can change how we think about life and death.

"I hate that this was a last tweet," tweeted Brad Kovach, a 22-year-old computer science student at the University of Wyoming, in response to Ghawi's last tweet.

Kovach said in an interview that the exchange gives us a joyous snapshot of Ghawi, but probably not the goodbye Ghawi would have picked if she knew she was speaking to the world for the last time.

But he acknowledged being uncertain about what's a fitting final tweet.

"I'm thinking if that was me, I wouldn't want that (message) to be me. At the same time, I kind of do, I just want it to be a very positive expression," Kovach said. "Hopefully, your life doesn't end in tragedy and I guess there's no preparing for that."

For Spector, who ribbed Ghawi once more after her final tweet before the horror unfolded, her last statement is haunting. "It's impossible to comprehend, and worse because Jessica isn't here to tweet the right thing," Spector wrote in a column hours after her death.

Roberta Cohen, a grief specialist who runs a firm that responds to traumatic events all over Texas, said people who generally don't think about their own deaths are jolted by occurrences like the Colorado shooting because they can relate to the victims and what they were doing before they died.

"An event like this breaks through that denial and gets us to look at life-and-death questions," Cohen said.

Even if they're not profound statements, people are touched by final comments, more than they are moved by deliberately reflective, insightful statements made in times when nothing significantly changes afterward, she said.

Twitter and other social networks make it easier for those comments to spread quickly. For some, tweets by those killed ? retweeted and appended by others, are the first time they put a name to who died.

"It's a pretty amazing concept that we can see what people are thinking just moments ago, and moments later their lives change," Cohen said.

It has happened before, most notably with the famous.

?Andrew Breitbart, the conservative blogger and publisher who died in March after collapsing while walking near his home, used his last tweet to apologize to a follower for calling him a "putz."

?Dr. Frank Ryan, a well-known plastic surgeon from Beverly Hills, veered off a cliff in 2010 just minutes after tweeting a picture of his dog looking out toward the ocean from a sand dune.

?Heavy D's final tweet late last year became as memorable as his rap hits when he wrote simply: "BE INSPIRED."

It goes beyond postings from the famous and highly publicized, though. Months of Facebook updates by a mother who died soon after giving birth to a son resulted in a memorable 2010 Washington Post story told through her posts. Her final post, less than 12 hours before she died, told of her fear at being transferred to another hospital for more evaluation and testing.

These glimpses, pecked away by fingers or thumbs in fleeting moments and amplified only when their significance becomes known, are spurring people to more publicly share spontaneous thoughts about moments of life and death. All it took here to open the floodgates were a couple 140-character messages, and the knowledge that the people who wrote them had died ? mere moments or hours ago ? in a very public tragedy.

Those brief glimpses still don't give us firm answers. But that's not quite the point.

"It really kind of intensified my whole emotional response to the whole tragedy," Kovach said. "It definitely just reminds us that even if our only common thread is that we both have a Twitter account, we're still humans and we're in this together."

Is it possible the test might come below the legal limit - DUI Attorney ...

Question: Is it possible the Blood alcohol test might come below the legal limit for my DUI in Burbank, CA? I don?t know what the results were, but the officer wrote .08% BAC on the ticket for my DUI.

Answer: Anything is possible. Did you perform a breath test or blood test? If you performed a breath test and the officer wrote .08% or higher, than it is probably likely that you were .08% or higher as far as they are concerned. Keep in mind just because the breath machine says you were a .08%, it doesn?t necessarily mean that you were. You should speak to a DUI attorney about this in more detail. Feel free to call me at 818-336-1384. Also, if you did a breath test after being arrested, your breath results my appear on yoru property or booking receipt.

PST: Soccer and Nelson Mandela's 97th birthday

source: Reuters

Former South African President Nelson Mandela celebrates his 94th birthday with his family at his home in Qunu in South Africa?s Eastern Cape province. (Reuters)

Nelson Mandela turns 94 today, with the world taking time to reflect on the contributions of one of this era?s political icons. While the former president of South Africa celebrated quietly with his family, his nation engages in a day of service, honoring his sacrifices. Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison as part of his role fighting the country?s apartheid regime, spent the day at home in Qunu, a village on South Africa?s eastern shore.

I wasn?t even in high school when Mandel was released in 1990. He was more myth than man for a 13-year-old yet to realize a true political consciousness. Now 22 years later, it occurs to me: I never had any real context on Mandela?s significance. Where it not for occasions like today?s ? time taken to remind people like me of Mandela?s sacrifices ? he could Alexander the Great, Paul Revere, or Che Guevara, even if his life overlapped with my own.

Lira, a recording star in South Africa, helps remind people like me of Madiba?s life-changing contributions:

The rest of the world knows him as Nelson Mandela. We, as South Africans, choose to call him Madiba, his Xhosa clan name. Since I was a young girl growing up in the Daveyton township in Johannesburg?s East Rand, Madiba has always been my hero.

?

Madiba was our hope for a change, for a better way of life. He spent almost half his life in darkness so that we could be brought into the light. When that tearful and joyful day came on the 11th of February in 1990, we were able to witness this amazing revolutionary reemerge in freedom, from where he had entered in chains. His glorious emancipation marked our own. The excitement among the people was electrifying! A new era had dawned and you could feel the anticipation in the streets.

Soccer is a small, probably insignificant part of Mandela?s story, but Mandela is an important part of soccer?s. The fabled games on Robben Island were said to draw his attention from the prison?s isolation, and when he was released (and eventually became his country?s first democratically elected president), the sport helped empower a reborn nation.

Richard Maguire explains:

Without doubt, my best Mandela moment in football took place on July 12, 1994. That was the day he was inaugurated as South Africa?s first democratically elected president.

It was also matchday at Ellis Park, where Bafana Bafana were playing host to a powerful Zambia, in Clive Barker?s second match in charge.

The stadium was crammed beyond capacity with 60 000 people eager to enjoy ?Mandela Day?.

The action was end-to-end and the atmosphere pulsating, but at half-time the match was scoreless. But this was the cue for the big moment as Madiba arrived by helicopter, direct from the inauguration ceremony at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

South Africa would go on to win the match, 2-1.

There have been other happy Madiba moments, like seeing him hand the Nations Cup trophy to Neil Tovey on February 3, 1996 and being present in Zurich in May 2004 to hear Fifa president Sepp Blatter announce South Africa as World Cup 2010 hosts.

But not even that beats that afternoon in May ?94, Mseleku?s bearhug notwithstanding. I can hear the crowds? massed chants today, as if the late Sizwe Motaung was still overlapping down the right: ?Sizwe, Sizwe, Sizwe!?

Yes, that day marked the rise of Bafana Bafana and the rebirth of our nation. Unforgettable.

I?d like to wish Nelson Mandela happy birthday, but he doesn?t read this blog. Instead, I?d like to thank those who reminded me of Mandela?s contributions. Some of you will read this. Congratulations on coming together to honor a revolutionary.

Child abuse tied to housing crisis? New study finds links

A new study in the journal Pediatrics found that when an area's foreclosure rate increased, so did the rate of children admitted to hospitals with abuse-related injuries. Is the housing crisis to blame for a rise in severe child abuse?

As the US housing crisis worsened during the 2000s, severe child abuse increased, according to a new study published online this week in the journal Pediatrics.

The study, whose lead author was Dr. Joanne N. Wood of the Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia, found that for every percentage increase in a metropolitan area?s foreclosure rate, the rate of hospital admissions for children who had been beaten increased by 6.5 percent.? And for every 1 percent increase in the 90-day mortgage delinquency rate, child abuse admissions increased 3 percent.

The numbers run counter to other past studies that show an overall decline in child abuse rates ? studies that have primarily taken their data from child protective services rather than hospitals.

?This suggests that maybe the problem is not getting better,? Wood told Reuters.

Although researchers acknowledge that they can?t know for sure whether or how the two statistics are linked (social scientists, by the way, tend to look critically at these sort of Freakonomics-style correlations), they say that the findings make sense ? both the stress and disruption of home foreclosures may well lead to more abuse.

While researchers found that unemployment rates did not have a similar correlation with abuse admissions, it?s possible, they theorized, that foreclosure and mortgage delinquency rates were more representative of a family?s breaking point.?

Researchers studied the numbers of children admitted to 38 hospitals in the Pediatric Hospital Information System database. They found that between 2000 and 2009, there were approximately 11,800 admissions for physical abuse in children younger than 6 years old ? about a quarter of a percentage of the nearly 4.2 million admissions overall.

The worst year was in 2008 ? the height of the housing crisis.

Marvel?s Three Biggest Problems In Bringing Guardians Of The Galaxy To The Big Screen

Officially announced at Comic-Con and teased in the weeks leading up to it, was that Marvel Studios was going to make their cosmic super group, Guardians of the Galaxy, the next big team feature to come to the movie theater. Even though the GOTG was a great space opera comic series written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, anyone who hasn?t been reading comics over the past 5 years will be pretty much clueless as to who this team is . So what is Marvel going to have to do to get the non-comic book reading public to the box office? The answer is nothing short of a complete and total rewrite.

The success that Marvel Studios has had since Iron Man released back in 2008 can be mostly attributed to two things. Not only have they picked tent pole heroes from the Marvel universe that even people who would never pick up a comic book could recognize, but they also pulled them from the Ultimate Marvel imprint that was started back in 2000. Ultimate Marvel was the comic giant?s effort to basically have a ?do-over? with all of the Marvel universe by creating new more cohesive origin stories and getting rid of the decades of cumbersome back story and cross-over that have hindered a lot of new readers from getting into Marvel?s line up over the years. This is the major problem with Guardians of the Galaxy, not only are they not recognizable to the general public, they don?t even have the benefit of a simplified Ultimate Marvel background to draw upon, and even though the newest iteration of the group only appeared for the first time in 2008, their origins are every bit as convoluted as any other long running Marvel super group.

Problem 1: The Origin Story

This is sort of the hardest thing to explain about the Guardians of the Galaxy, their origin story has an origin story. Back in 2006 Marvel ran a huge comic event (as Marvel just looooooves to do) that dealt primarily with their cosmic characters called Annihilation. Without going into too much detail, Annihilation was a multi issue cross-over event that dealt with the invasion of the universe by an evil super powerful space bug called Annihilus from the?Negative?Zone. It was during this massive invasion that Drax (a future Guardian of the Galaxy) kills Thanos which was his whole entire purpose in life, freeing him up do do what ever he wants to do now. So already, we have reached a point where the comic and movie universes don?t gel. If you stayed for the easter egg in the credits of the Avengers then you know that Marvel is trying to set up Thanos as the big bad for the future of the movie series.

After the Annihilation war is over, that?s when the Guardians form right? Nope, it was due to the Annihilation wave weakening the Kree empire that the next massive series event starts, Annihilation: Conquest. Even though it has the word Annihilation in it, A:C had nothing to do with Annihilus but rather another cosmic invasion that popped up right after it. It seems that the future Guardians of the Galaxy team leader, Peter Quill (aka Starlord, the guy with the mask on in the recently released concept art) did such an awesome job fighting the Annihilation Wave that he was tasked with the rebuilding of the Kree empire?s defenses in the war?s aftermath. To bad he was tricked by the techno-organic virus wielding Phalanx (another huge back story involving the X-Men) into letting them invade the Kree homeworld?s defenses and taking over the entire Kree Empire while throwing up a huge impenetrable shield that traps everyone inside of the Kree?s galaxy.

It was during the Annihilation: Conquest storyline that we see all of the Guardians in action for the first time across multiple comics, but still not working together. Starlord has most of the future Guardians with him as a low-tech (so they can?t be detected or infected by the Phalanx) Guerilla strike force behind enemy lines sorta like an Inglorious Basterds?in space, while others, like the now free to do as he pleases Drax and cosmic assassin Gamora, are infected by the virus, eventually cured and help cosmic space cop Nova with his end of the crisis, until the deed is done and the Phalanx are defeated.

It is after all of this huge convoluted setup that Starlord decides two giant cosmic events are enough for one lifetime, and decides to form what is now known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. The group was formed with the specific purpose of nipping huge Annihilation level events from happening in the first place. So the GOTG?aren?t?just some thrown together vigilante group out to fight bad guys, they are a battle hardened group of war weary survivors trying to save the universe. ?So I have no idea how Marvel Studios plans on shrinking that little nugget of origin story down to something that will fit in a 2 and a half hour movie.

A reasonable question might be, ?Why not just pull a story out of the series, surely they?ve done more stuff than all of these Annihilation cross-overs?? Sure,?they?ve?done more than the Annihilation cross-over.?They?ve?done the War of Kings cross-over and the Realm of Kings cross-over, right before they ended their series run with the opening of the Thanos Imperative cross-over. The entire continuity of the newest incarnation of the Guardians of the Galaxy is tied up in huge universe spanning cross-overs. ?I love the series, I love all of the Marvel cosmic series that Abbnett and Lanning have been involved in, but I have no idea what Marvel was thinking when they thought they could pair this stuff down into a movie.

Problem 2: The Characters

There has been a lot of whining by comic fanboys about the apparent absence of Adam Warlock from the team in the recently released concept art for the movie. To those that have a problem I would just say, what did you expect? Sure, Adam Warlock is a HUGE part of the storyline for the comic but how on Earth are you going to introduce what has basically been a sort of messianic character for the Marvel universe that has been involved in every major development since the Infinity Gauntlet series of the early 90?s? In short, you don?t. Adam Warlock is probably one of the most complex characters in all of the Marvel Universe, if the studios are staying away from him take it as a blessing not a curse. This is probably the same reason Phyla-Vell, Moon Dragon, and Major Victory won?t be in the movie either.

On the other hand, the movie will have its hands full when it comes to Starlord, which is a real shame. You might think Starlord is a pretty grandiose name for a guy that just runs around shooting things with pistols and you?d be right, it is. But the thing that really makes Starlord interesting isn?t the cool guns, wicked?face mask, and absurd name; it?s the fact that he used to be a card carrying superhero. Marvel has ignored his actual origin story since his recent comic revival, which is good because it?doesn?t?make any sense in the natural continuity of the Marvel universe anyway. To put it simply, Peter Quill was picked by an alien entity called The Master Of The Sun (apparently an old man who lives in the sun) to become a super hero protecting the cosmos. He gets a cool suit, he can fly, and he saves lives wizzing around the cosmos in a sentient ship. All goes great until he sacrifices a planet full of people just to capture one crazy bad guy and ends up in jail because of it. It was during Annihilation that Starlord breaks out of prison and proves his worth battling Annihilus. So the current saga of Peter Quill/Starlord is one of an ex-super hero who is trying to atone for his sins and his arrogance, which makes him incredibly interesting but also impossible to to sum up in an ensemble movie.

The other Guardians that appear in the concept art are a bit easier to deal with aside from Drax (who I?wouldn?t?be surprised if they got Vin Diesel to play) who?didn?t?like to play with others until he had already killed Thanos. Rocket Raccoon has had many appearances in comics before without really developing a huge?back story. Groot is a giant tree who first appeared during A:C and the only confounding thing about him is how he started off speaking in complete sentences and then for some reason when he came to the Guardians of the Galaxy series he was only able to utter the words, ?I am Groot? and no one seemed to notice. Gamora is such a marginal character in the universe that she?ll basically be a blank slate for the writers to play with as well.

Problem 3: The Name

As you may or may not have heard by now, this is not the first incarnation of Guardians of the Galaxy. The original group had a comic run in the 90?s and were a far-future version of the Avengers who battled the evil alien menace called the Badoon. When the current version of Guardians was formed, they?didn?t?even have a name, that was until one of the members of the original/future Guardians was found locked in a block of ice by the modern day group and mentioned his group?s name. Rocket Raccoon who was trying to brainstorm up a name for the new super group latched on to this and decided that they should take it as their own. While writers could easily come up with a million other ways for them to get their name without including that whole side story or including Major Victory as a team member, the main problem is, the name itself?doesn?t?make any sense.

If you have an empire in the comic books then your empire probably engulfs an entire galaxy. The three major empires in the comic books are the Skrulls, the Kree, and the Shi?ar. In the aftermath of the Annihilation Wave that threatened the entire universe, the Guardians have decided to hop around the cosmos sealing up tears in the fabric of space time and fighting whatever pops out or chooses to exploit these cosmic leaks. ?The Guardians don?t guard just one galaxy, belong to a singular empire, or even reside in one, their main base is in a space station floating at the edge of the universe. In other words, Guardians of the Universe, makes a lot more sense than Guardians of the Galaxy. In essence, if Marvel is going to make sense of this super group to the masses then they are going to have to not only remake their entire back story, but they are going to have to find a way for the name to make sense as well.

I really enjoy Marvel?s films, but my one major gripe has always been that the films seem a little too weighted down by exposition. With a completely unknown super group like the Guardians, lengthy exposition will be unavoidable. In some ways, turning Guardians of the Galaxy into a movie will be far more challenging than what Marvel did with the Avengers. If you ever treated yourself to the comics, then you know that Abnett and Lanning know how to do large scale, epic space opera, but unfortunately almost all of the stuff that makes the comics so incredibly good will have to be thrown out so as not to loose the audience. Let?s hope they figure out a way around this mess that?doesn?t?leave us with a 5 hour movie.
