Scrawl Puts a Quick-Access Syncing Notepad in Your Menubar [Mac Downloads]

Scrawl Puts a Quick-Access Syncing Notepad in Your MenubarMac OS X: Want to store short notes in the Mac OS X menubar? Synced across multiple computers? With search capabilities? That's what Scrawl can do for you.

My very first post at Lifehacker was about rolling your own menubar-based notepad using an HTML file and Fluid, the great site-specific browser (SSB) creator. I used that menubar notepad to keep track of little text snippets for quite awhile, but its inability to save was always a major downside. I never got around to making it better, but perhaps that's because other software has come along since. Scrawl seems to be the best option so far, because on top of allowing you to save multiple, ease-access snippets in a little notepad in your menubar it also syncs those notes with iCloud so you can access them on your other computers (and iDevices, when the iOS app is released). On top of that, if you're looking for a specific note you can use the built-in search functionality. It's a pretty simple app that scratches a specific itch, but it does it well.

Some argue that these little apps are silly when you can use the great, free Notational Velocity. It's one of my favorite apps, but I like to use it for text I intend to save and use again later. I don't just throw anything into it. I like to have something else for temporary text. If you have the same needs, Scrawl is a really good option. It's tiny, stays out of your way, and is a good place to just dump some text you might want to reference later. Either that, or any other purpose you can think up.
