Gov. Mark Dayton is trying again with the feds to provide disaster aid following the June 20 floods in Duluth and nearby communities.
FEMA agreed early on to pay some public infrastructure costs, but it denied individual assistance for individuals and businesses affected by the flooding, saying the damage was not of the "severity and magnitude" required for the aid.
Now Dayton has sent a letter to the Small Business Administration, asking it to provide aid to businesses in Carlton, Pine, and St. Louis counties, and to the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
Wrote Dayton in the request:
"I certify that at least 25 homes or businesses, or a combination thereof, within the Counties of Carlton, Pine, and St. Louis, and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, have sustained uninsured losses of 40 percent or more of the estimated fair replacement value or pre-disaster fair market value of the damaged property, whichever is lower. Therefore, I request a US Small Business Administration Disaster Declaration for the State of Minnesota in the Counties of Carlton, Pine, and St. Louis, and for the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, which is located in the Counties of Carleton and St. Louis. I further request that SBA disaster loans be offered to eligible individuals and businesses in the contiguous counties."
A special legislative session is also planned for later this month to send state disaster aid to the flood-affected areas.
